Will Liverpool regret missing out on this £11m man?

Mohamed SalahLiverpool’s 2-2 draw with Aston Villa last weekend was further evidence that there’s still work to be done with this squad. Whilst Brendan Rodgers has helped kick things up a notch at Anfield, it may be another season or two until he’s truly ready to duke it out with the Premier League big boys.

Whilst this season has been an unprecedented success for the Reds, they haven’t been able to keep pace with the likes of Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester City. That, I would argue, is due to a lack of squad depth. Sure, Liverpool have the two of the best strikers in the Premier League in the shape of Daniel Sturridge and Luis Suarez, but their midfield still leaves a little to be desired.

With Steven Gerrard getting on in years and Philippe Coutinho still a little inexperienced, the Reds lack balance in this department. They also lack cut and thrust down the wings and it’s here that I’d like to see Brendan Rodgers splash some cash this January.

That’s why I was somewhat disappointed to see The BBC claim that Chelsea are close to wrapping up a £11m deal for FC Basel’s wing-wizard Mohamed Salah. This news follows on from The Mirror‘s claim (just days earlier) that Brendan Rodgers had been given the go ahead to make an £8m bid for FC Basel’s wing-wizard, Mohamed Salah.

You probably remember Salah, he’s the man who grabbed a couple of goals against Chelsea, helping his side to record two victories over the London-based team. In truth, however, he’s been in electric form all season long. Last season he scored 10 goals in 49 games. This year, he’s already found the back of the net 10 times in the space of 29 games.

That’s quite something, considering he’s just 21-years-old. If he continues to develop, he’s sure to blossom into something very special indeed.

It’s easy to see why Brendan was interested. This could prove to be a very smart move indeed on Chelsea’s part.

The hope will be that the Egyptian can help drag Chelsea across the finishing line in the fight for the Premier League title. Liverpool, on the other hand, will have to go without. It’ll be interesting to see how they react.

Here’s hoping that they don’t fall out of the running as the days go by.

What’s your take? Should The Reds make a move for Mohamed Salah, or steer well clear?
