Kevin StrootmanManchester United’s recent string of disappointing performances have provided further evidence of how badly David Moyes (and the club’s top brass) performed during the last transfer window.

Taking over from Sir Alex Ferguson, who may well be the best club manager of all time, it was up to Moyes to stamp his mark upon the team. The former Everton man needed to bring in a couple of big players and start building a new, exciting Manchester United.

He can’t have been unaware that his new club was suffering from a serious creative deficit. United have needed to sign a world-class play-maker for two seasons now. Unfortunately, Sir Alex’s move for Shinji Kagawa failed to reap dividends. United have been struggling on this front for some time.

So why did dithering Dave opt to sign Marouane Fellaini, a talented, but frustrating defensive midfielder? It was a move that lacked imagination and signposted a sort of desperation on Manchester United’s part. Nobody else was available, so David Moyes swooped in for somebody he already had a relationship with.

This brings us to our current situation: The Red Devils have lost two games on the trot and are in general disarray. There’s now a good chance that the club won’t earn Champions League football next season.

With this in mind, it’s up to David Moyes to do everything he can to steady the ship. Of course, he’ll need financial backing from his club, but he’ll also need to be a bit braver in the transfer market too.

This brings me to The Star‘s claim that Manchester United are still in the running to sign Roma’s dynamic midfield presence, Kevin Strootman. United had an interest in the Dutchman back when he was playing for PSV. Given that they recently sent Phil Neville to watch Strootman during a Holland international game, I’d say the interest is still there.

The 23-year-old cost Roma £17m last summer. He’d cost Manchester United considerably more, given that he’s currently right at the beginning of a long-term contract.

But the tough-tackling, quick witted Dutchman would make for an excellent addition to this United squad. He’s got Paul Scholes’ steely resolve and he’s also a tidy footballer, capable of picking out gaps in between defenders. He could be exactly what the club needs.

So here’s hoping that David Moyes is ready to make this deal happen.

What’s your take? Should Manchester United make a move for this deadly Dutchman?
