Football : FC Porto / Sporting Braga - Europa League - Finale - 18.05.2011 -FC Porto’s defensive midfielder, Fernando, is a hot prospect throughout Europe. He’s earned a lot of plaudits over the last couple of seasons and is thought to be one of the best players in his position. Given his reputation, perhaps it’s not all that surprising that Brendan Rodgers is thought to be interested in him.

The fact that Liverpool are doing so well this season is partly down to Luis Suarez and partly down to Brendan Rodger’s transfer policy. Since his arrival, the former Swansea City boss has been extremely positive in the transfer market. He’s brought in players like Philippe Coutinho and Daniel Sturridge, players who have driven the Liverpool revival.

He’s also managed to get the most out of players like Jordan Henderson. But let’s not lose track here.

I’m sure Rodgers will be looking to keep the momentum up during the January transfer market. And if he is, I’m sure he’ll be looking to bring in a midfielder. With a surplus of central defenders and two super-star strikers in their squad, the midfield is the one place that the Liverpool boss may choose to re-assess.

It’s my hope that he continues his winning streak with a move for Fernando. There’s a reason why he’s earned the nickname ‘Octopus’, for his dynamic displays in Portugal. I’ll let the man himself explain:

“I remember people started calling me Polvo (Octopus) but I didn’t really understand why. Later they told me it was because I ran a lot, because I seemed to be everywhere and had lots of legs. It was an encouraging sign of recognition for me.” (Source: FIFA.com)

The Octopus has a real desire to do whatever it takes to win games and get results for his team. If that means tough tackling, last ditch challenges, or timely interceptions, he’s capable of it.

I’m sure he’s desperate to break into the Brazil team (at the moment he only has 3 caps for the U20 side) and a headline making move to Anfield could help him to achieve this.

It’s thought that Manchester United are also interested in the Brazilian (Source: The Star). But with Liverpool’s new found sense of purpose (and position in the Premier League table), maybe they’re ready to take on the Red Devils?

Here’s hoping that the club has the money and the drive to make this one happen.

What’s your take? Should Liverpool move in for the Octopus or steer well clear?

  • Patrick says:

He’s athletic, strong, tall, and dynamic, be a good signing. Lucas after that knee injury moves and turns very slowly but would be good backup to Fernando and Liverpool would then look strong in that DMF position.
