Should Arsenal join the chase for this £12m German ace?

Kevin VollandWith Arsenal in desperate need of signing a new striker, it’s not yet clear what direction Arsene Wenger will go in. Will he sign a world-class talent who’s capable of taking Olivier Giroud’s slot in the first team, or opt to snap up a young understudy who could prove to be ‘one for the future’.

Whilst I hope he goes for the former, I think the latter option is more likely. Arsenal just splashed £42.4m on Mesut Ozil in the summer. They pretty much tripled their previous transfer record. The Gunners have never spent money like that in the past.

It’s likely to have left a real dent in the Gunners’ bank account. With the January transfer window a notoriously difficult time to sign quality players, I just can’t see Arsene Wenger making another marquee signing.

That won’t stop me from crossing my fingers, but I do feel that targets like Hoffenheim forward Kevin Volland have more of an air of verisimilitude.

The 21-year-old has made real waves in the Bundesliga this season (and with the Germany U21 side). He’s scored eight goals (in 17 games) at a club who are struggling to make any real impact (they’re currently 11th in the table). This, in and of itself is quite impressive. But he’s also caught the eye due to his direct attacking nature, strength on the ball and excellent link up play. He certainly looks like one to watch.

His performances have led TalkSPORT to claim that Manchester United, Chelsea, Liverpool, Tottenham and yes, Arsenal, are all interested in signing him. He’s thought to have a price-tag of around £12m, but this should be well within the Gunners’ financial wheelhouse.

Of course, if they’re interested, they’ll have to fight off a fair amount of competition.

But he would represent a good option for the Gunners. With Olivier Giroud looking increasingly tired, I’m sure he’ll be glad to see the arrival of a strike-partner who won’t threaten his long-term future at the club.

And in terms of the Gunners’ title charge, Volland could well prove invaluable. His goals and energetic performances could help drag Arsenal over the finish line.

He’s also the kind of player whose price-tag could double over the next couple of years if he continues to develop at this rate. That sounds like a good investment to me.

What’s your take? Should Arsenal move in for Kevin Volland, or go after somebody more experienced?
