Ilkay GundoganManchester United’s recent string of results have left plenty to be desired. Whilst a Wayne Rooney/Robin Van Persie inspired victory against Arsenal seemed to have reignited the Red Devil’s fire, defeats to Everton and Newcastle have extinguished the flame.

This is a Manchester United side devoid of ideas, craft and inspiration. David Moyes was taking on a tough task when he took over from Sir Alex Ferguson. Unfortunately, he hasn’t been equal to it. At the moment, there’s a chance that this side may not earn Champions League football next year. For Manchester United, that is unacceptable.

I can’t help but hope that David Moyes turns things around. He has the experience and know how to do so. He simply needs to be a bit braver and act a little more fearlessly in the transfer market.

Last summer he dithered and dawdled until it was too late. He could have signed Thiago Alcantara, who ended up buying time and earning a move to Bayern Munich. Then he wasted time pursuing Cesc Fabregas, who was never going to move to Old Trafford. In the end, he was left with only enough time to wrap up a deal for Marouane Fellaini, a player that United didn’t really need.

So let’s hope that this isn’t the case in January. Let’s hope that Manchester United’s transfer machinations have already started and that the wheels are already turning. Let’s hope that when the window slides open Moyes is ready to launch some bids.

In particular, I’d like to see him make a move for German ace, Ilkay Gundogan. According to The Star, his current club Borussia Dortmund aren’t sure whether they’ll be able to keep him. His contract will run down in two summers time and he’s shown no signs that he wants to agree new terms.

As such, I’m sure that his club would be willing to sell should the right offer come in. If United are able to cough up £25m, they may well get their man, but they’ll have to fight off competition from Barcelona.

He’s certainly worthy of his price-tag. He’s technically gifted, has a neat range of passes and isn’t afraid to get involved physically. Combining this with his quick feet and speed of thought makes him  real danger. United could certainly use his presence at this moment in time.

Let’s hope that he really is on David Moyes’ wish list.

What’s your take? Should Manchester United opt to compete for Ilkay Gundogan?
