Sami KhediraIf you believe the papers, both Manchester United and Arsenal are interested in signing Real Madrid ace, Sami Khedira.

The Mirror claim that the two clubs will both attempt to sign him at the end of the season, when he’ll have just a single year left on his contract.

The main source of Arsenal’s link to the player seems to come from the fact that he is a close friend of the Gunners’ new signing Mesut Ozil. They spent time together at the Bernabeu (and with the German international side) and get on very well.

But even if Ozil were to whisper in Arsene Wenger’s ear, it’s difficult to see Arsenal moving in for Khedira. The Gunners midfield is already packed to bursting and there’s just no room for another crafty midfielder (even if the German’s game is more geared towards breaking play up, winning the ball and keeping it).

So that leaves Manchester United. Initially I found it a little difficult to understand why David Moyes would be interested in Khedira. After all, the new United boss only just signed Marouane Fellaini, a player who operates in Khedira’s area of the pitch.

What United really need is a creative midfielder. Or, to look at it another way, they need to unlock the creativity hidden within the players that are already available to them.

Signing Khedira would allow Marouane Fellaini to play further up the pitch, where he’d be given more license to run at defenders, use his technical ability and try and find a way through the back-line. He hasn’t really impressed me as a holding player, but given his qualities, I think he could do a job as part of the attack.

This would also give players like Shinji Kagawa, Tom Cleverley and Michael Carrick (when he returns), more time and space on the ball and more impetus going forward.

It’s thought that Khedira would cost Manchester United around £20m. That’s a lot of money, but he is a fully-fledged German international with a great reputation. I’m not surprised that David Moyes is interested in him if he’s really available at that price.

With United already seemingly out of the running for the title race, it’s time to start building for next year. Making inroads for this German ace certainly seems like a step in the right direction.

What’s your take? Would Sami Khedira be a good option for Manchester United?
