Is this the last chance Liverpool have to re-unite with this ex-Anfield hero?

AlonsoThere’s no doubt that Liverpool are flying high at the moment. Yes, Brendan Rodgers spent well over the summer, but few could have predicted that Liverpool would have had such a strong season up until this point.

But from the moment Liverpool beat their long-term rivals, Manchester United, earlier on in the season, it was clear that things were going to be different this year. The Red Devils are well on their way to mid-table anonymity), whilst Brendan Rodgers’ boys are title contenders.

That’s some turn around.

This is largely due to their two excellent strikers, Luis Suarez and Daniel Sturridge. The England international has been in spectacular goal-scoring form and has also been able to comprehensively dismiss any claims that he’s a selfish footballer. His link-up play is excellent and he’s not afraid to put it on a plate for others.

The fact that Liverpool haven’t missed Sturridge during his long-term injury lay-off is largely due to Luis Suarez. He’s far and away the Premier League’s best player and the main reason that the Reds are doing so well this season.

If there is a weakness within this Liverpool squad, it’s in the midfield. With Steven Gerrard getting on in years and Philippe Coutinho still maturing, I wouldn’t be surprised if Brendan Rodgers looked to shore this area up during the January transfer window.

According to The Mirror, the Reds are still in the running to sign former Anfield legend and current Real Madrid star, Xabi Alonso. With his Madrid contract set to expire at the end of the season, there’s certainly a good chance that he’ll be tempted by a chance to move back to the club he still loves.

There’s still a chance that he could put pen to paper for a new Real Madrid deal. Even if he doesn’t, there are sure to be plenty of interested suitors. This is where his old connection could help sway the deal in Liverpool’s favour.

Free transfers usually demand high wages and Alonso is likely to be no different. But we know what he can offer. He’s still a fantastic footballer, with an expert range of passes and the ability to unlock defences of all levels of ability.

If I were Brendan Rodgers, I’d be making my interest clear before it’s too late.

What’s your take? Should Liverpool go back in for Xabi Alonso?
