Can Newcastle really keep hold of Yohan Cabaye?

Yohan CabayeYohan Cabaye has made a lot of effort to make up for his misdemeanors over the summer. The Frenchman did himself no favours with his attitude during the transfer window, but he’s reacted in the best way possible. His performances have helped to steer a Newcastle team that struggles for goals to a solid mid-table position.

And with Cabaye still in tow, the Magpies will hope to challenge for a Europa League place as we move into 2014.

But the memory of the way that Cabaye fluttered his eyelids at Arsenal will linger on. The Frenchman was a long term target for the Gunners (and PSG) throughout the summer and could barely hide his desire at a move.

It was disappointing to see, but perhaps not all that surprising. Newcastle weren’t all that great last season and I’m not surprised that Cabaye found the opportunity to compete for silverware appealing. Yes, I’m sure he would also have got a wage bump, but that won’t have been his key motivation in regards to any potential move.

He’s a smart man. That’s clear enough from the decisions he makes on the football pitch. We need to ask ourselves: if we were in his position, would we have done things any differently?

Unfortunately, Cabaye’s recent comments will have done plenty to dredge up old emotions:

“As far as I know, there has been no contact with Paris Saint-Germain. Who wouldn’t want to join PSG today? Paris make other teams afraid in Europe, more so than last season. I really hope they win the Champions League.” (Source: The Star)

Whilst I wish he would have just kept quiet, I think it’s time for fans to accept that Cabaye may not be sporting a Newcastle shirt next season. He been a top performer since his arrival at St James’ Park in 2011 (he was fantastic against Manchester United last week) and deserves a shot at a bigger club.

Cabaye continued to say: “Since my arrival, I’ve given everything for the club.” Amen to that. If he leaves in the summer, I’ll certainly be sad to see him leave, but I’ve come to terms with the inevitability of it.

What’s your take? Should is it time to let go of Yohan Cabaye? Will he be moving to PSG or Arsenal in the summer?
