Could this £10m defensive ace be just the ticket for Arsenal?

Seamus ColemanNow that we’re approaching Christmas and Arsenal are still on top of the Premier League table, I’d say it’s about time that we all started considering them as title contenders. The Gunners are far and away the best side in the League and may even be able to make serious inroads in Europe this season.

There’s a fair amount of anti-Arsenal bias in the media, so the club still isn’t getting a lot of backing at the moment. But it’s very hard to look past the likes of Aaron Ramsey, Santi Cazorla and Mesut Ozil. This is one of the finest, most creative midfields in world football. On their day, they’re damn near unplayable.

But, believe it or not, there are areas of the pitch which need some tweaking. Arsenal are strong in every area, apart from the centre-forward position and the right back position.

Don’t get me wrong. I’m as big a fan of Arsenal’s current right back, Bacary Sagna, as anybody else. The way that the Frenchman has come back from two leg breaks is quite remarkable. The fact that he’s now 30-years-old and is playing some of the best football of his career is inspirational.

He’s known for his consistent performances, his willingness to support the attack and his defensive stability. He’s got a mean cross on him too. The fact that he can fill in as a centre back helps quite a bit too.

But if he gets injured (or indeed, opts to leave the club, as may be the case soon enough), then Arsenal begin to look short of options. I’m just not convinced that Carl Jenkinson is ready to step into the Frenchman’s boots. Over on the left the Gunners have both Kieran Gibbs and Nacho Monreal, two top class left backs. Arsenal just don’t have that strength in depth over on the right.

That’s why The Mirror claims that Arsenal could snap up Seamus Coleman. The Irish full-back is an extremely hard-worker who doesn’t lack for attacking flair. At 25-years-old, he’s also got enough experience (and miles left on the dial) to hold some appeal to Arsene Wenger.

A few years ago Coleman was thought to be one of the best young talents in the country. A move to Arsenal could get him firing on all cylinders once again and give his career the kick in the teeth that it needs.

The source suggest he could cost Arsenal £10m. That’s a relatively low fee for an experience Premier League defender with a good reputation. If the Gunners can’t agree new terms for Bacary Sagna, Seamus Coleman would certainly represent a decent alternative.

What’s your take? Should Arsenal be in the market for this Everton ace?
