Will Newcastle be able to keep hold of Loic Remy?

Loic RemyLoic Remy’s relationship to Newcastle United is more than a little strange.

He was a player that Newcastle were highly interested in back in January. At that stage, a move looked to be on the cards. But at the last minute, Remy was snatched from the Magpie’s grip as he partook in an £8m move to QPR.

Rangers may not have been able to offer him a shot at success (or anything approaching it), but it seems that the paycheck he’s receiving on a weekly basis is more than enough to compensate.

It’s always a shame to see a top player hiding his light under a bushel at smaller clubs, when they could be making a name for themselves on a bigger stage. But money talks.

As we know however, despite his best efforts, Loic Remy was unable to keep QPR up. As a result, they were banished to the Championship and forced to sell their best players.

In the end, Remy finally got his move to St James’ Park. He’s currently serving a season long loan with the Toon. He seems to be enjoying himself too. Check out these quotes:

“The most important thing for me is putting in great performances and doing well for Newcastle. Then, hopefully I can try to get a more regular position in the French squad, which is a focus for me as well.”

“Then at the end of the season, as I am still a QPR player, I will look at whatever offers come in – whether that be from Newcastle or from QPR. At that time, I’ll consider what is best for me and what is best for my future career.” (Source: The Star)

Of course, given his talents, we’d all like to see him claim that he wants to stay with Newcastle. He’s the kind of player that would drive the club onto bigger and better things. It’s a little unnerving to see him being so open about his future.

But it’s only natural I suppose. Loic Remy could do a lot better than a mid-table Premier League side.

Alan Pardew, at least, is being realistic about the situation. Asked about whether Newcastle could tie Remy down, he responded:

“It’s a difficult question. Obviously, we want to keep the best players and he’s started really great. I think there’s a long road yet for him and for us before we get to permanent issues. I think we both have decisions to make on that.’’

Yes, it’s a long-road, but I hope Newcastle are already hashing out the details. Pardew is kidding himself if he thinks Newcastle can do much better at this moment in time.

What’s your take? Is Loic Remy a good fit for Newcastle United? Should the club look to tie him down on a long-term deal?
