Should Manchester United move back in for this La Liga superstar?

Luka ModricJust when it looked like Manchester United were turning things around, they go and produce yet another lifeless display. This time, it was a 0-0 draw with a lacklustre Real Sociedad side. It was a performance that confirmed all the fan’s worst fears about the current state of their midfield.

Players like Marouane Fellaini (who was red carded in the dying minutes), just can’t provide the creativity necessary to spur United forward. Fellaini is a ball-winner. He’d probably be more effective if he was played further up the pitch and asked to produce knock-downs.

Then there’s Ryan Giggs, who doesn’t quite have the legs he used to. With players like Patrice Evra and Rio Ferdinand approaching the autumn of their career, this issue is prevalent throughout the entire squad.

But back to the creativity issue: whilst I thought United improved once Shinji Kagawa was drafted into the middle, it’s clear that there’s a lot of work to be done here. I’m surprised that David Moyes didn’t bring in somebody over the summer (why didn’t they go in for Mesut Ozil?). Still, when the January transfer window finally arrives, it’ll give United another shot.

It’s my hope they go in for another Real Madrid star. United have been linked to Luka Modric for some time, I’d love to see the club make their interest concrete.

Modric recently spoke about United’s past interest: “I also knew of the interest of the United and even if the transfer did not materialise, the public appreciation of a great like Sir Alex is a big pride for me.” The Star also claim that David Moyes attempted to bring in Modric over the summer.

Whilst Luka Modric didn’t enjoy the best debut season at the Bernabeu, things have picked up significantly in recent months.

United have a creativity deficit and Luka Modric would provide a quick fix. We all know what he can offer. He’s a quick thinker, reads the game well and is able to pick out gaps in between defenders. Isn’t that exactly what Manchester United need right now?

Of course, he won’t come cheap. Real Madrid will expect top dollar for a player that they only recently brought in. But given the desperate nature of Manchester United’s current midfield problems, I’d say it’s worth splashing some cash.

If it pulls Manchester United up towards the top of the Premier League, it would represent a smart investment.

What’s your take? Would you like to see Luka Modric finally get his move to Old Trafford?
