Nicklas BendtnerNicklas Bendtner has spent the last five years turning himself from a man embarking on a promising career, into a laughing stock.

When Nicklas Bendtner first arrived at Arsenal, he provided a welcome counter-point to the Gunners’ fleet-footed, pacey and technically gifted forwards. Nowadays, Arsene Wenger doesn’t seem to trade in these kind of players. As things currently stand, Arsenal’s only real striking options consist of Nicklas Bendtner and Olivier Giroud. Both players are slow, technique-free, goal poachers.

But one’s a lot better than the other. His name is Olivier Giroud. He’s powerful, difficult to shake of the ball and he links up well with the midfield. He’s also a genuine force in front of goal. The same can’t be sent of Nicklas Bendtner. The great Dane has really lost his way in recent times.

It didn’t take long for his career to begin to fall apart. He has always been blighted by allocations of ‘arrogance’. He has a certain, ‘I’m better than you’ demeanour, despite the fact that he has no meaningful achievements to his name.

There’s also the fact that he can’t seem to keep his pants on. We’ve all seen Bendtner’s boxers more times than we care to admit.

With his off the field antics and his failure to make his mark on the pitch, it’s now clear that Bendtner has no future at Arsenal. So why has it taken Arsene Wenger so long to get rid of him?

In the past, it has been suggested that the Gunners have struggled to sell him due to his unwillingness to take a pay-cut. It seems this is no longer the case. Check out these quotes from Bendtner himself:

“I want to get away from Arsenal. Whether it is for winter, we must wait to see. I weigh my decision depending on where the highest sporting challenge lies. In this context, finances mean very little for me. I’ve been playing football since I was four years old and back then it was for the love of the sport. It is for that love that I play today as well.” (Source: The Mirror)

That’s great news. It’s also news that suggests that Bendtner has matured over the last six or so months. This may give clubs who are still interested in him the impetus to make their move.

If it means that Arsenal can finally wave goodbye to the hapless Dane, then all the better. If they can do so on good terms, then I’m sure all the fans would be willing to wish him well.

What’s your take? Is this evidence that Bendtner has matured?
