Are clubs really still interested in this hapless Arsenal star?

Nicklas BendtnerBelieve it or not, there are still clubs out there in the world who are interested in signing Nicklas Bendtner.

The man may look like an unkempt samurai and he may have offered diminishing returns over the last four years of his career, but it seems there are still teams who are willing to take a gamble on him.

We haven’t even mentioned his attitude problems yet. When it comes down to it, Bendtner is less a footballer, more a walking sideshow. He’s a constant distraction. He should have blown his career to smithereens by now.

The fact that he’s so easy to parody is revealing. There’s a reason why the whole ‘Greatest Striker in the World’ thing spread so quickly. He has that arrogant swagger and cocky gait. He really does seem to think that he’s the best thing since sliced bread.

So how does he explain his lifeless performance against Chelsea in the Capital One Cup? That game represented his best chance of breathing fresh life into his career. As it happens, he wandered around the pitch, struggled to control the ball and didn’t link up well with the midfield.

Arsenal’s midfield have been purring all season long, but Bendtner provided no goal threat (he hasn’t scored for Arsenal since 2011). As a result, the Gunners offered no cut and thrust going forward.

He’s only at Arsenal because the Gunners have nobody else to turn to. At the next possible opportunity (as soon as there’s a world class replacement in place), he needs to be sent packing.

But who would take him, right? Well, according to The Star, Stoke City, Hull City, Sunderland and Crystal Palace are all ready to take a gamble. Didn’t Palace learn their lesson when they signed Marouane Chamakh?

At 25-years-old, there’s still a chance that he can re-build his career. But there’s no chance that this will happen at Arsenal. Even without much real competition, he’s flopping. He needs to drop down to a smaller team and start putting in a larger amount of effort. I hope he realizes what’s at stake.

Arsenal may not make too much profit from his sale, but that shouldn’t stop Arsene Wenger from cashing in. Getting him off the wage bill would be a relief in itself.

What’s your take? Should the Gunners send Nicklas Bendtner packing?
