Should Arsenal’s search for a right-back stop here?

Micah RichardsIt’s been great to see Bacary Sagna get back to his best this season. The French right-back was once known as ‘Mr Consistent’. You could set your watch by the lad, such was the level of performance he produced on a regular basis.

At his best, Bacary gets up and down the flanks quickly, can whip in smart crosses and also provide a certain degree of defensive stability. Most full-backs tend to be weak either defensively, or offensively. It’s rare that you find somebody who excels at both elements of the game.

But Arsenal have found that man in Bacary Sagna.

Last season he was cautiously making his way back from two long-term injuries. This season he looks rejuvenated and seems to have been fired up by the arrival of a genuinely top notch player in the form of Mesut Ozil.

But there is some trouble in paradise. Sagna’s now 30-years-old and hasn’t agreed new terms with the Gunners. He could be on his way out of the Emirates in the near future.

This would leave Arsene Wenger in a precarious position. Arsenal’s replacement right-back, Carl Jenkinson doesn’t seem to be ready for regular Premier League action. He still needs time to learn and grow. With that in mind, Arsene will have to consider his options in the transfer market.

I can’t help but hope that he takes a look at Micah Richards, a man who doesn’t receive his fair share of games at Manchester City.

Richards recently spoke about his future and his current role at the Etihad: “I did say at the start of the season I wanted to see the manager’s plans and I’m in his plans, as he’s said all along, so we’ll see what the future holds, but I’m happy at Manchester City. I’ve been here since I was 14, it’s a club I love.”

These quotes do little to suggest that an Arsenal move could be on the cards, but we do know that Richards is a boyhood Arsenal fan. If Arsene Wenger were to swoop in and offer him regular first team football, I’m sure he’d find it hard to resist.

At 25-years-old, Richards is further along in his development than Carl Jenkinson and is also a more physical specimen, better suited to the rigours of the Premier League.

There’s no word about how much he would, but it may be money worth spending for Arsenal.

What’s your take? Should Arsene Wenger look to sign Micah Richards?
