In their search for creativity should Manchester United turn to youth?

Will HughesDerby County star Will Hughes is certainly one to keep your eye on. At just 18-years-old, there are plenty who are already tipping him to have a big career. At this stage, I certainly won’t be betting against him.

The dynamic midfielder is smart beyond his years. The blond bombshell positions himself well, works space, can read the game well and pick out passes. He’s also a flair player, who can trick his way past people, and get in behind.

It’s great to see a young English player whose best attributes are his passing ability and technical mastery. It makes a change from all the youngsters who are trained to value tough-tackling and aerial dominance above all else.

But this shouldn’t be surprising. Hughes’ heroes are Xavi and Andres Iniesta. Those are the kind of players he hopes to emulate and it’ll be interesting to see if he has enough ability to pull it off.

He’s only young and only really made rose to prominence last season (with 38 appearances), but the signs are extremely good. New Derby boss Steve McClaren knows that his club will have to work hard to keep him:

“Our job is to make sure he makes it. Eventually he will be too good. What we need behind that is players coming through to replace him.”

Interestingly enough, The Star follow up this quote by suggesting that Arsenal, Liverpool, Manchester City AND Manchester United are all interested in a January move for Will Hughes. There could well be a fight for his signature when the transfer window re-opens.

Arsenal’s midfield is decked out with talent. Liverpool have Philippe Coutinho. Manchester City have more than enough options. But Manchester United desperately need more creativity in their midfield.

I’m sure fans will be on the look out for a more experienced player (perhaps that’ll come as well), but turning to youth has served the club well in the past.

With Adnan Januzaj already making his mark at a young age, David Moyes now has an opportunity to build a young, creative midfield that could develop into something very special indeed.

I’m sure Hughes would fancy a move to the Premier League and an opportunity to play for the Champions. He’s talented enough to do so and I’d love to see him get a shot.

What’s your take? Would Will Hughes be a good option for Manchester United?
