Why Tottenham should keep this Brazilian sensation on their watchlist:

Alexandre PatoWhilst Tottenham fans wouldn’t exactly have been keen to lose their best player, it has opened up a world of possibilities for them in the transfer window. In the past, they could well have been accused of feeding off of Manchester United, Chelsea, and Arsenal’s scraps.

That certainly wasn’t the case this summer. Andre Villas-Boas carved his own bold path through the transfer window, made some extremely exciting signings and set Spurs up well for the season.

A North London defeat has taken the sheen off of Tottenham’s good start to the season, but that result shouldn’t change the complexion of the club’s season. Spurs could really achieve something this season. They may not quite be ready to challenge for the Premier League title, but should be aiming for Champions League action next year and may even fancy themselves in the transfer market.

That’s particularly true if AVB continues to show the same level of ambition in the transfer market. I was fascinated to see The Star claim that Tottenham had a late bid for Brazilian sensation, Alexandre Pato turned down. The ex-Milan forward had the following to say about his situation:

“I received offers, they called Corinthians, sent a fax, to sign me in the window, but I sat down with the staff, talked with my agent and I told them I wanted to stay. I wanted to help Corinthians fight for a place in Libertadores.”

That really is too bad for Spurs. Pato is a truly world-class talent, who would have elevated Tottenham onto an entirely different plain. He’d also have provided a welcome counter-balance to the more physical Roberto Soldado.

When injury isn’t an issue, his goal record speaks for itself. There was a period between 2008 and 2011 when he was averaging a goal every two games. Whilst his fortunes have faded in recent years (thanks to long-term lay-offs), his decision to leave Milan and return to Brazil seems to have reignited his career. The 24-year-old has scored 15 goals with Corinthians.

It doesn’t look like he’s particularly interested in a move to the Premier League, but Tottenham should do their best to tempt him. Even more so than Leandro Damiao, the man is the real deal. He also has experience at the top level and must be keen to prove himself once more.

The only issue could be his price-tag and the fact that Tottenham have already spent a lot of money. Still, I can’t help but hope that Villas-Boas and Daniel Levy don’t let this opportunity pass them by.

What’s your take? Should Spurs look to entice Alexandre Pato to the Premier League?
