Would this £16m star fit in at Manchester United?

Alex SongWho told Alex Song that moving to Barcelona two summers ago was a good idea? His blind optimism is almost impressive in its naivety. Unfortunately, Song made the move without considering the impact it could have on his career. It wouldn’t surprise me if he’s already come to regret the decision.

At Arsenal he was a regular first teamer and had a good reputation. Whilst he frustrated fans with his lack of discipline and organisation, his tough tackling was effective and he did form viable partnerships with Arsenal strikers (particularly Robin Van Persie).

I’m sure it was his flair moving forward that held appeal for Barcelona. They went into the deal thinking that they’d get the world’s most attacking defensive midfielder. Before long, however, they realised that they really don’t need him.

Whilst Arsenal’s fortunes have improved over the last year (they’re currently top of the Premier League table!), Song has been forced to sit out plenty of time on the Barca bench and hasn’t made any real impact at the Nou Camp.

With players like Sergio Busquets and Javier Mascherano ahead of him in the pecking order, it’s been difficult for him to earn game time and find any kind of consistency.

As a result, we’ve heard some reports suggesting that Manchester United are keen to snap up the defender during the January transfer window (source: The Star). This seems a little strange, especially as the Red Devils have just signed Marouane Fellaini, but let’s go with it.

Song may wait to see if he can force himself into new Barca boss Gerardo Martino’s plans. If he can’t, I’m sure he’ll be itching for a move. I’m sure he’ll also be surprised that he holds appeal for clubs like Manchester United.

Unlike players like Cesc Fabregas who had a genuine love for Arsenal, I don’t get the feeling that Song’s previous London-links will form a barrier to a move to Old Trafford. His £16m price-tag may cause some consternation, however.

If United really feel like they need an additional defender in their midfield, I doubt they’ll struggle to seal the deal. He’s way down in the pecking order and Barca may feel like they would value the transfer fee a lot higher than the player.

It wouldn’t be the most spectacular deal ever, but it could be one with plenty of utility for both sides.

What’s your take? Do Manchester United really need another defensive midfielder?
