Is this Arsenal’s essential January purchase?

Soccer: Juventus' friendly matchArsenal’s fine start to the season could all come undone with an Olivier Giroud injury.

That’s a sad truth. Arsene Wenger made a fantastic summer signing in the form of Mesut Ozil, but what the club really needed was a striker. Since Robin Van Persie left the club, Arsenal have lacked a degree of inspiration upfront.

The Dutchman is among the best strikers in world football. His exit was always going to create issues within this squad. I would argue that even after all this time, Arsene Wenger hasn’t done enough to replace him.

Don’t get me wrong. Like everyone else, I’ve come round to Olivier Giroud this season. Whilst he hasn’t got any faster, his first touch has improved significantly and he’s beginning to look like the real deal. Some of his finishes thus far this season have been sublime.

What’s most important, however, is the fact that he has been scoring on a regular basis. In fact, he and Aaron Ramsey have shouldered Arsenal’s goal-scoring burden between them thus far.

But beyond him Arsenal have nobody. Yaya Sanogo is injured and inexperienced. Chuba Akpom just isn’t ready. That leaves Nicklas Bendtner, who quite frankly, is a no go.

Whilst the summer transfer window was only closed recently, I think it’s fair to say that January can’t come soon enough.

According to The Star, sources in Italy suggest that Fernando Llorente has become frustrated by his current role at Juventus. The big Spanish centre-forward only moved to Serie A this summer, but is already finding competition tough.

He’s behind Carlos Tevez and Miko Vucinic in the pecking order and may struggle for game-time this season. As such, a number of top Premier League clubs have already begun to circle around the former Athletic Bilbao ace.

The Star suggest that Arsenal, Chelsea and Tottenham are all in the running. I would argue that it’s Arsenal who need him most.

It would be interesting to see how much Juventus would ask for Fernando Llorente. After all, Juve signed him on a free. If they’re not willing to use him, maybe they’ll let him move on for a reasonable fee?

Either way, Arsenal have money to spend and should be able to tempt Llorente into a move. Surely that would be the best possible thing for all parties involved?

What’s your take? Should Arsenal move in for Fernando Llorente?
