Could Tottenham still have the last laugh?

Andre Villas BoasArsenal’s 1-0 victory over Spurs last weekend somewhat took the shine off of what has been a fantastic summer for Andre Villas-Boas and co.

Then the Gunners followed up their victory by signing one of the best players in the world, Mesut Ozil. It seems that Arsene Wenger want intent on stealing Tottenham’s glory.

The North London derby defeat, alongside the Arsenal’s deadline day antics may have taken the wind out of Spurs’ sails. But Andre Villas-Boas could yet have the last laugh.

It’s worth remembering that Spurs lost the same fixture 5-2 last year (and lost by the same score the year before that). A 1-0 defeat could be seen as a step-up, especially considering that Tottenham may feel to have left the Emirates without a draw.

By the end of the game, Spurs had Arsenal on the ropes. Arsenal Wenger bent the shape of his team into something unrecognisable, playing four full-backs alongside the club’s centre-back pairing. With no attacking outlet, Tottenham were able to pile on the pressure and create a number of good chances.

The fact that Tottenham were able to match Arsenal so closely is nothing to sniff at. Even without Gareth Bale, they still possess a massive threat and should be aiming for a top four finish this season.

What’s more, Andre Villas-Boas and Daniel Levy have taught Arsene Wenger a lesson in reacting to the loss of your best player.

A year or so, many would have believed that losing Gareth Bale would send Spurs plummeting down the table. Now there’s a very good chance that they’ll come back even stronger this season.

For a start, Spurs have one of the most physically imposing midfields in the Premier League. They won’t get bullied this season and will be able to compete with all comers. But that’s not to say that they can’t get the ball down and play as well. Players like Moussa Dembele and Paulinho have excellent technical ability and I’m excited to see them play together.

The addition of Roberto Soldado upfront is an important one. The Spaniard has excellent pedigree and will provide the club with the goal threat they lacked last year. If both Soldado and Defoe find some goal-scoring form, Spurs will be shoe-ins for a Champions League slot.

Over all, things look very good and I expect Tottenham to look even better once the team has gelled together.

Arsenal fans may feel chirpy at the moment, but should reserve judgement until the end of the season. Spurs still have the bite of an underdog, combined with a world-class squad. That’s a dangerous combination.

What’s your take? What can Spurs achieve this season?

‘Arsenal fans may feel chirpy at the moment, but should reserve judgement until the end of the season’……..lol…. like spud fans and pundits do every season ha…… reserve until end of season …joke

  • sammy says:

I truly feel that Spurs will surprise everyone this year.. Just like they’ve been for past 40 odd years.

  • wildad says:

spuds will never finish above arsenal..gooner forever

Seriously children!! Lets presume spurs did some how manage to beat Arsenal…. so what
Arsenal will still be the better team irrespective of the actual teams on pitch. This is simply because to take title of best team really you have to prove it consistantly

  • Jay says:

HAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!! a 1-0 defeat is a step up?
Take some time to ponder that Spurs fans. Is that the impression you really want to give of your team?
    This article is PATHETIC.

The thing about ARSEole FC supporters; they think Tottenham are trying to emulate ARSEole and that we aim for them???!!!!! We are aiming to win silverware this year with a stronger squad. One swallow does not make a summer and also one bug eyed german *unt does not make you contenders for any trophy.

    • DoubleDoubleDouble says:

Spurs shouldn’t try to emulate Arsenal. I would suggest they aim to emulate something realistically achievable first.

What have i seen my team in my lifetime!
        3 FA CUPS
        2 LEAGUE CUP
        1 UEFA CUP
THATS MORE TROPHIES THAN CHELSEA HAD WON IN 100 YEARS BEFORE ABRAMOVICH £££££££££.
TEN YEARS IS AN AWFUL LONG TIME FOR A TROHY FOR A ‘so- called’ BIG CLUB!! Big club my ARSEole

        • DoubleDoubleDouble says:

It’s true, ten years is a long time to go trophyless for a big club. Could you tell me what club you are referring to though?

That’s an impressive trophy haul, it’s as many trophies as Arsenal won during my lifetime…

          …under George Graham.

  • Robbie Rotten says:

Sorry, the only way Spurs are getting into the top 4 is if ManUre fail to…and that has to be a possibility this season.

As for Arsenal riding their luck this last 4 years, well, no…they have got more points than Spurs by winning more games…no luck involved there. Spurs, in spite of spending big, still didn’t manage to catch Arsenal even when we had one hand tied behind our back with the move.

The pressure is on Spurs big time this year to break into the top 4 after splashing out their Bale money on half a new team. If it goes south, say hello to 10 (more) years of mediocrity whilst you’re scrabbling for money for a new stadium.

  • shane says:

Lol Arsenal was injured and missing a good number of players. Tottenham spent 150m on players and failed to beat a weakened team. Tottenham only improved on what they were already good at instead of finding a Bale replacement. The spurs can’t buy class.

  • Pete Higham says:

Lol! Spurs are second rate. With all the players arsenal had missing and the arrival of ozil (thanks Mr levy) arsenal will easily beat a spurs team littered with expensively average players.

  • angel gooner says:

    Haha stu deluded or what.

Tell me what do you win? What have you seen your team win? Your a bunch of jokers.

The closest you have come to a title is watching Arsenal win it at yours twice.FACT.

Double double double Sol Campbell has won the Double.
And the shyte from the lane have won f*** all again and
Sol Campbell has the won the double.

    • Jg says:

Not sure which north London side was last to win a trophy??? Urmmmm oh yeah spurs carling cup I believe. How many seasons has it been since arsenal last won anything?? Well soon we can add another 1 to that total. Arsenal fans should pipe down!!! Dickheads the lot of em!!

      • gooner says:

You are referring to the the carling cup spurs won?its considered a micky mouse trophy nowadays. Top sides now aim for FA cup and league title for domestic honours.

        • Stu says:

I remember some WOOLWICH fans crying at the end of the BIRMINGHAM FINAL IN THE MICKY MOUSE CUP. Players looked gutted. Trophy is a trophy and you just grasp that.

  • Stu says:

ARSEoles are running this page like the cochroaches they are. YOU ARE THE PRIDE OF SOUTH LONDON. South london is red, North London will always be white. Woolwich ARSEole FC get back in your place. We did everything first, you can never match us or do these things again. DEAL WITH IT. First double winners, first european winners ( and we still have more euro trophies ) winning the Fa Cup as a non league club ( NEVER to be matched ) and, along with Man Ure, the only club to have won a trophy in the last 6 decades. D E A L W I T H I T

    • DoubleDoubleDouble says:

First double winners – apart from the team that won the double before you, of course.

First European winners – 3 minor European trophies to our two, neither of us have much to boast about in European competition. Do you want to compare league title wins? How about combined major trophies?

Winning FA Cup as a non-league side – that’s probably the least impressive thing that I have heard, congratulations.

Winning a trophy in each of the last 6 decades – random and arbitrary stat.

Arsenal were a North London side before Spurs, as they were in Middlesex until the mid-1960s. Think about that, Spurs have never won a league title for London…that is an absolute disgrace. Only Arsenal and Chelsea are pulling their weight as far as representing London goes, you should be ashamed at the embarrassment you have brought to our capital.

Little tip for you; if you are going to argue about trophies with other football fans, so as you don’t embarrass yourself, try not to do it with supporters of Arsenal, Man Utd or Liverpool. Or Chelsea. Or Everton. Or Aston Villa. Or Man City. Or Notts Forest. Or Huddersfield.

  • Col says:

Spot on Stu, these imposters from South London are a joke its great fun watching them when they sneak down to the lane surrounded by half of the met police!!!

  • gooner says:

How is losing 1-0 a step up. I admire the ambition shown by spurs in the market but a defeat is a defeat. There is no step up. At the end of the day you still have 0 points.

  • Woolwich Nomands says:

At least we dont have to visit the swamp again this season in the league. Lets wait and see what happens in the return fixture at the Lane when our players kinda know each others first name let alone have gelled as a unit. The players we have are far too good not to gel and they will. Question is how good can they be?
