Reports coming out of the north east are suggesting that manager Paolo Di Canio is set to be the first manager sacked in the Barclays Premier League this season. Di Canio openly criticised his players in the media after their 3-1 defeat to Crystal Palace on Saturday, confessing that he “couldn’t change his players hearts”.
When speaking after the match the fiery Italian lambasted his captain John O’Shea who was sent off after conceding a penalty for a foul on Palace striker Dwight Gayle. The former- Swindon manager also criticised South Korean striker Ji after the striker was seen pulling out of a header with the goal in front of him.
Di Canio’s decision to criticise his players so publicly has only increased the unrest at the club. This summer a division has emerged in the Sunderland dressing room, between the core squad from last year and the vast number of new additions to the squad the manager has made.
According to reports, Sunderland officials are unhappy with Di Canio’s latest outburst after they backed their new manager so heavily in this summer transfer window.
It is understood that when appointed as replacement for Martin O’Neill, the Italian was told that he must curb his temperament and improve his behaviour if he were to be taken seriously as a Premier League manager.
Despite saving Sunderland from relegation last season, the feeling is that the manager has overstepped the mark and his continued fractious relationship with a large contingent of his squad, could ultimately see him depart the Stadium of Light.
Former Brighton manager Gus Poyet is rumoured to be interested in the role, however the Sunderland board are thought to be considering taking another managerial “risk” with an approach for Bournemouth manager Eddie Howe. (Source: MSN)

ure it must be hard but over the decades I’ve been following football the code among managers that asserts that you should never criticise your own players in public has pretty much always been followed. This manager has broken with the code and in my opinion has no place in English football. ‘If you tolerate this then your children will be next’. Aggressive, bullying man management is a- counter-productive and b- illegal under UK employment law.
