Could another BIG Arsenal deal be on the way this January?

Ilkay GundoganFollowing the signing of Mesut Ozil, Arsenal already have one of the strongest, most creative midfields in the Premier League, perhaps even throughout Europe.

The German ace is one of the best footballers in the world and will improve the team immensely. But the Gunners already had Jack Wilshere, Santi Cazorla and Mikel Arteta on their books, three of the finest passers in the game. Tomas Rosicky and Aaron Ramsey aren’t too bad either.

In other words, Arsenal are pretty strong in this position. It’s hardly likely to be a priority moving forward.

But this hasn’t stopped Arsene Wenger from making further additions to this area of the pitch in the past. When it comes to the transfer market, the Frenchman is often rather hard to judge. He tends to target top players indiscriminately, rather than focusing on specific needs within his squad.

Whether or not this is the right approach, it does keep things interesting. It has, for instance, provided impetus for The Star to link the Gunners to Borussia Dortmund midfielder, Ilkay Gundogan.

The German ace was believed to be a target for the Gunners throughout the summer and Arsene Wenger could be set to re-ignite his interest during the January transfer window.

I’m sure he’s monitoring the player’s current contract situation very closely. Gundogan has a deal with Dortmund that runs until 2015. As of yet, there have been no signs that he’s going to agree new terms. Here’s what the player has had to say:

“There is nothing new to comment on, those talks and negotiations are actually on-going. If we had anything to announce, we would reveal it. I am not going to make statements on the contents of those talks. Everyone has to be patient about it.”

Gundogan may well end up signing a new deal with the forward thinking Bundesliga side. Either way, the 22-year-old is a player that Arsenal should be monitoring.

He’s a great all-round midfielder, with excellent technical ability, grace on the ball and passing range. He’s also capable of putting in a challenge, or breaking up play.

Whilst he’s still developing, he’s already proven himself at every level of the game. As such, he’d come with a pretty hefty price-tag (especially if he agrees a new deal with Dortmund).

But we know that Arsenal have money to spend and a new-found willingness to do so.

He may not be exactly what Arsenal need, but he certainly has the quality to improve this squad. Let’s see if Wenger can pull off another wonder deal!

What’s your take? Should Arsenal be chasing Ilkay Gundogan?

Wilshire is useless. Hyped up. Over rated and crap.
Typical British flop that is given extra privileges yet he is useless for club and country.
The fact he is compared to real world class like Ozil or cazorla shows how dumb British fans are trying to live in dream land.
