There’s been a lot of speculation regarding the future of Christian Eriksen throughout this summer (and throughout last January, and last summer). Liverpool have been linked strongly with the Danish youngster but didn’t seem to have the courage of their convictions.
For one reason or another, Brendan Rodgers has never followed up on his interest and never put in a concrete bid for the player.
That wasn’t the case for Spurs, who have been attracting players left, right and centre this summer. So much for the claim that you need Champions League football to attract top talent, eh?
According to The BBC, Tottenham agreed an £11.5m deal for Eriksen. Ajax boss Frank de Boer has already described Eriksen’s leaving the club as: ‘an enormous loss’.
But it must have been a loss that Ajax have been bracing themselves for, for some time. After all, the vultures have been circling for a number of years now. With good reason too — Eriksen is a very exciting young talent.
I’d argue that he’s somewhat comparable to Lewis Holtby, but he’s a significant upgrade on the German midfielder. He’s got an excellent range of passing, reads the game well and also chips in with a few goals. Last season he managed to nab 9 goals from the centre-of-midfield, which is all the more impressive given his age.
As for the question as to whether he’ll succeed in the Premier League, why not let De Boer field that one: “It would surprise me if that won’t happen.”
That sounds promising. Eriksen is a quick thinker and is unlikely to be caught out by the pace off the Premier League. He’s still young, but he’s already good enough to make an impact on the first team. Over the next two-or-three years, I can see him taking up a key role in the squad.
It’s difficult to understand why Brendan Rodgers has let this opportunity pass him by. But Liverpool’s negligence could be Tottenham’s reward. Let’s hope that this ends up being yet another astute signing from Andre Villas-Boas.

Should have got him, right age, super price, plenty of ability, would have fitted in. What are they smoking at Anfield? Another nail in Liverpools coffin.
I bet you know nothing about this player apart from some tabloid/website gossip and a YouTube compilation (notoriously unreliable)!
We don’t need him. We have Coutinho who is better and cheaper.
I have a friend who lives in Holland and the general consensus is that he isn’t as good as everyone seems to be making out!! He is a good player, no doubt, but not that special apart from in transient bursts! He was cheap so why did the rest of Europe ignore him?
I don’t think Liverpool need him at the moment, Rodgers has already stated that he wants Coutinho in the attack mid position & wants a new left sided winger/forward to make this happen. signing Eriksen (as good as he is), would’ve kept Coutinho out on the left. Personally, I think that’s all there is to it, he’d prefer Coutinho in that position over him. Great signing for Spurs, as are some of their others. I can see this being a tough season ahead for Arsenal and Utd, both failing to improve over the summer so far.
I think Brenden didn’t go for him because he believes Liverpool have enough depth in midfield.
They need wingers and CB, not really a CM.
