Bastian SchweinsteigerGiven all the talk concerning Cesc Fabregas and Manchester United over the course of this summer, it’s something of a relief to see the club get linked to another midfielder.

According to The Mirror, Manchester United have set their sights on signing Bayern Munich star, Bastian Schweinsteiger.

This is a refreshing change of pace. He’s not a player who has been mentioned too often this summer (largely due to the fact that’s he’s content at Bayern Munich) but he certainly has the quality to make an impact at Old Trafford.

Schweinsteiger is the ultimate one-club man. He’s been a part of the Bayern first-team set-up since 2002 (he had been part of the Bayern youth team since 1998) and has made 299 appearances for the current Bundesliga champions.

Given the club’s current strength and the fact that they’re entering a new era alongside Pep Guardiola, it’s difficult to see why Bastian. would want to leave.

But there have been some suggestions that Schweinsteiger is not a major part of Pep’s plans moving forward. Whilst it’s difficult to imagine the German International struggling to hold a place in any team in world football, he may well be put to the test next season.

Guardiola has already brought in Barcelona midfielder Thiago Alcantara. The two have a strong connection and I wouldn’t be surprised if the Spanish youngster made an instant impact at the Allianz Arena.

Then there’s ex-Borussia Dortmund midfielder, Mario Gotze. In many ways, the young German midfielder is the heir to Schweinsteiger’s throne at Bayern Munich. I certainly expect him to be a regular feature the Bayern first team.

I’m sure the fans would be extremely disappointed to see him leave, but Pep Guardiola is in such a strong position, that he can perhaps afford to let him leave.

Bastian is now 29-years-old, but given his status in the game, he will still command a huge price-tag. The Mirror claim he could cost Manchester United as much as £25m.

That’s a lot of money, but at least David Moyes would know exactly what he’s getting. Schweinsteiger oozes class. He moves the ball about like few other midfielders in world football, he’s committed, works hard and always tends to bring his influence to bear upon games.

As a replacement for Paul Scholes, I can hardly think of anybody better.

What’s your take? Should United really be on the hunt for a 29-year-old midfielder?

Tiger is old, wen he was 27 we had options to buy him, fergie didn’t, is it now at the age of 29. Other clubs are cutting down their age average, and we r trying to add to ours.

Sorry but ppl saying that because Fergie had time we should afford the same to Moyes, are missing something claringly obvious!…Fergie came at a time when Utd were NO WHERE NEAR what they are now, he had to have time just to sort out the crap mentality and the sub standard way the club was and had been previously managed, add to the fact that the likes of Lpool were “top dogs” then!, we didnt have a good youth set up either….fast forward to now and can you honestly say the same about Utd now!?…NO!….So to say that Moyes needs time just like Fergie is ridiculous, ask yourselves this…would you be happy knowing that we have a set up as good as any club to go 4 years without a trophy?…the answer would be NO!…why because the foundations are there (unlike when fergie took over!), the sooner Moyes gets 2 CMs, the better and stop making an arse of yourself for all to see…the scatter – gun approach to the transfer market is nothing short of embarrassing for a club like Utd, simply put why we even contemplated Cesc after Barca already sold Thiago is questionable, and to make it worse the way in which it has been played out for all to see has been amateurish, for me it would have made alot more sense to have gone for Gundagon/Modric (straight away!) and Strootman – and now that Roma seem to fancy Nani (although id prefer to keep him) id ask for De Rossi in return!…should Rooney go get Muriel or swap him Zlatan (at PSG):
    De Gea
    Raphael/Fabio – Rio – Vidic – Baines
Gundagon – Carrick – De Rossi
    Kagawa
    Zlatan/Muriel – Van Persie

Im not saying that Moyes cant do the job but I also think that some of the focus regarding the inability to get players has to fall on Ed Woodward!
