Loic RemyOn May 15th, 2013, Loic Remy, along with two other men, was arrested regarding an alleged gang-rape that took place earlier that month. This moment will likely haunt his entire career. It may well come to define it.

Earlier this week, The Metro, who make no mention of Remy’s shady past, linked the French forward to Newcastle.

He’s a player who has been linked to the Magpies on numerous occasions, but this was before the allegations arose. This was before Remy’s reputation took a real battering.

Let’s not forget that Remy was scheduled to meet with Newcastle in January, but failed to turn up. In the end, the money that QPR offered was just too tempting.

It’s easy to see why he would have appealed to Newcastle, whilst he was still slotting home goals for Marseille. Playing as a striker-cum-winger for the Ligue 1 side, Remy was able to bag a very respectable 39 goals in 95 games.

He also won plaudits for his pace and technical ability, with some even comparing him to Thierry Henry, one of the greatest players to ever set foot in the Premier League. These claims may not be completely off the mark.

On the football pitch, Remy looks like the real deal. Despite injury problems and concerns over his heart, the French striker has taken the Premier League by storm.

His darting runs, grace on the ball and eye for goal really caught the eye last season. He certainly seemed to be a class above the rest of the QPR side (most of whom just seemed to be waiting for their cheques to cash).

Despite his prowess, Newcastle would be wrong to pursue him, given what happened earlier this year. Last season may have been disappointing for the Magpies, but that’s no reason to abandon the club’s values.

Besides, Remy made his choice last year when he chose QPR over Newcastle. He’s not a man who deserves a second shot.

What’s frustrating, is that it’s clear that Remy has the talent to live out an impressive career, regardless of what we think of him. With the allegations floating over his head, he doesn’t represent a very attractive prospect. That may not stop him finding success, but I hope it stops him finding success with Newcastle.

There has to be other options out there – surely?

What’s your take? Should Newcastle be in the market for Loic Remy, or should they take the moral high-ground?
