Should Liverpool seal the deal for this £13m prodigy?

Kyriakos PapadopoulosBoy have Liverpool been busy this summer. Brendan Rodgers must have been sorely disappointed with his club’s performance last season (or at least all too aware of the short-comings of his squad) as he is taking numerous steps to strengthen this summer.

We’ve seen old heads like Kolo Toure come in, along with La Liga aces, Luis Alberto, Iago Aspas and Aly Cissokho. Then there’s last season’s best Premier League goalkeeper, Simon Mignolet. It’s been a busy summer for the Reds and you get the feeling that Brendan Rodgers has been working his butt off.

Best of all, there’s still more to come. Earlier this summer, the Reds made a bid for Atletico Madrid forward, Diego Costa. They’ve also been in the running for Willian an exciting Brazilian talent.

And there’s more: according to The Star, they’re in the running for Kyriakos Papadopoulos, Schalke’s young defensive talent.

At just 21-years-old, the Greek ace has already earned a reputation for being one of the best young defenders in Europe. He’s got a real physical presence, is dominant in the air and is also effective along the ground. Given what he’s already capable of, his potential is quite startling.

Liverpool’s defensive options are starting to run out. With Jamie Carragher retiring and the futures of Martin Skrtel and Daniel Agger up in the air, bolstering this area of the squad further would be a smart move.

Brendan Rodgers is known to be a fan of the Greek defender and Papadopoulos is thought to be keen for a move to Anfield. What’s more, it looks like Schalke are willing to do business:

“There are a lot of clubs to take into account. Specifically, there is nothing that has arrived, as far as I know. There is currently nothing concrete, and besides, he is a mainstay for Schalke.”

As of yet, there’s nothing by way of a concrete bid, but should Liverpool’s interest increase, Schalke look willing to do business at the right price. According to The Star, the Bundesliga side is holding out for £13m.

That’s a lot of money, but given the player’s potential, I’d argue that it would be a good investment. In two-or-three years time, there’s just no telling how good he’ll be. Let’s hope that Brendan keeps up the good work and makes yet another smart signing.

What’s your take? Would you like to see Kyriakos Papadopoulos join the Reds this summer?

  • Costas Solomou says:

Pap is a quite good defender while he has also a leadership personality. Is the type of person that he will drag his fellow players to fight and win a game. We should prepare such a leader/player for the future since Gerard will retire in the coming years. His a strong and stabber defender who doesn’t like to loose.

  • Simon says:

Would love to see papa at liverpool, plays just like carra but stronger in the air! Thumbs up from me!

  • Big Will says:

Yes, by all means possible. This player is a massive talent and if he can overcome his injuries of late he could very well become will be Our Next Sami Hyypia!
If the fee is £ 13m it would be an absolute steal!

  • Louis says:

Liverpool and FSG are showing no intent in signing another quality player. Bredan Rodgers is yet to sign his 20+ goals man.

  • blindside says:

It seems to be far too late for this window as this topic has been mooted around so long that I cannot see it transpiring. I think he would be an excellent buy and excellent fit for now and the future. £13M seems to be a fair amount for both dealing parties. I rather think LFC , if they ARE thinking of such a deal , might be wary of his injury record. Pity.

yes, wish to see this man within the club,he is good in air and has spirit of winning all the time. U can do it Rogers, bring him to our boys…..

  • harry says:

rogers should ask owners to spend players under thirty million no good an old saying u pay peanuts u get monkeys

  • Louis lopyem says:

Bren should spend the last penny left 4 papa.signing him will be the most ever great signings done in the premier league.

  • Euzebius obiesika says:

Buying a good quality player like papa is okey,Rodgers should kindly do that before tranfer windows closes.

  • Nick C. says:

The clock is ticking before the transfer window slams shut. I think if there was a little more urgency in the market we could have gotten our new CB and winger/fwd in with plenty of time to spare.

I think the extent of our ambition will be a Victor Moses loan from Chelsea and a pitiful attempt at signing a df like Mahmadou Sakho or Thiago Ilori who we will still be haggling over until the last minute and lose out to Spurs, Man U or Arsenal.

Maybe more business will be done in Jan but I just don’t see any ambition from FSG.

Chelsea did us a favour smatching Willian but with the imminent sale of Bale for 86 million they will still have the cash to splurge even after they get Lamela.
