Could this £20m ace be exactly what Arsenal need?

Arda TuranWith Arsenal fans clamouring for signings, every transfer rumour seems to take on a life or death importance. The Gunners performance on opening day against Aston Villa was nothing short of a debacle.

It was a performance that had smug pundits rubbing their bellies, telling the world, ‘I told you so’. What’s more, all the worried Arsenal fans and the entire ‘spend some f***ing money’ crowd have been proven right.

The Gunners have weaknesses in just about every area of their squad. As far as I can tell, there’s a pressing need for a new centre-back, a defensive midfielder, an attacking midfielder and a world-class striker. Who they can bring in the time that’s left, is still in question.

I’d like to see Arsene Wenger turn his attention to talented Atletico Madrid forward, Arda Turan. He’s an attacking midfielder/winger, who has made plenty of waves in La Liga and looks to be set for a move to a bigger club.

He’s a pacey winger, who combines a willingness to bomb forward at every opportunity with a bag of tricks and a talent for taking on his man. He knows how to get into dangerous areas and has a fairly tasty cross on him.

Last season he played 32 times for Atletico Madrid, scoring 5 goals and netting a further 4 assists. At 26-years-old, he’s just about in the peak of his career and I’d expect that there’ll be more to come next season.

His agent, Admet Bulut recent told the Turkish Press that Arda would leave Madrid if his £20m release clause is triggered:

“A transfer to the Premier League for Arda is probable this summer,” Bulut said.

In England is where there is more interest in him, and they know Atletico’s position well. The Madrid club are rejecting all offers for him, but if his clause is paid there is nothing they can do. There have been contacts.” (via The Mirror)

The fact that Madrid are working so hard to keep the player speaks volumes of his worth. He’s certainly a few steps ahead of the likes of Gervinho (now a Roma player) and Alex Oxlaide-Chamberlain (who’s currently side-lined with a long-term injury).

Yes, he has a big price-tag, but he also has ability to match. I’m sure his signing would help ease the pressure on the club and put them in a stronger position for the rest of the Premier League season.

What’s your take? Should the Gunners go in for Arda Turan?
