Could signing this freebie prove costly for Arsenal?

Ciprian MaricaTo put it lightly, Arsenal’s summer spending has thus far been somewhat underwhelming.

With the season fast approaching, the Gunners just don’t look ready for what’s to come.

The squad just isn’t well-rounded enough. There are areas of the team that need to be looked at and further additions that need to be made. Unfortunately time is running out and it’s beginning to look like Arsenal will begin the next season with their pants down.

Talk of further potential signings have not been overly exciting. Take this story, courtesy of The Star, claiming that Arsenal are on the hunt for free-agent, Ciprian Marica.

Who, you say? Marica is a Romanian forward, who can play anywhere across the front-line. During his time he’s played as a winger, a secondary striker and a centre-forward. His versatility is probably what appeals to Arsene Wenger most.

That and the fact that he’d be available on a free signing.

Marica has played for big clubs like Shakhtar Donetsk, Stuttgart and Schalke 04.  He signed a two year deal with Schalke back in July 2011, worth 5m euros. He scored 9 goals in 52 appearances, though he was mostly used as a winger.

His Schalke contract run-out earlier this year and he’s believed to have drawn interest from teams like Lazio, Inter Milan and (his old club) Shakhtar Donetsk.

But it’s Arsenal who seem to be most interested. The player’s agent, Giovani Becali recently told The Press: “He is close to Arsenal. We’ll see this week. Marica is a very good striker, a Romanian international and very experienced in western European football.

It is normal that he is targeted by big clubs, all the more so after he has completed his contract with Schalke.”

I have to say, this potential deal has a touch of the ‘Marouane Chamakh’ about it. The Morroccan was signed on a free back in 2010, despite not having a good goal-scoring record.

The Gunners don’t really need another winger. They’re weak in the centre-forward position. This begs the question, why are they chasing somebody who has never scored more than 11 goals in one season (back in 2009-11, when he was at Stuttgart)?

If this deal goes through, it will cost Arsenal nothing. But we’ve seen from Chamakh’s current situation, how free signings can be a drain on resources.

Why Arsenal are wasting their time with this, I’m not sure. Surely the club has more pressing matters to concern itself with? Let’s hope that Arsene Wenger lets this sleeping dog lie.

What’s your take? Should the Gunners be in the market for this freebie?

Why are Arsenal wasting theit time? You are such an asshole. An agent claims Arsenal is interested, and you start slagging Arsenal off. Either you are an idiot who knows nothing about football agents and their ways, or just being a twat. Why did I waste my time reading this rubbish

Unfortunately gary, its thanks to garbage like this areticle, based on hot air that causes the weak minded to react as if we are dealing in facts (just look at the idiotic replies below your one, erm, except this one!!).

Even if we did sign him, (Inter Milan, lazio and Shaktar are really crap teams too I suppose?) thus adding depth to our wide areas is a positive (it would allow Cazorla to play centrally more for one thing), yet you wouldnt know it from this over simplistic retarded piece.
