Up until now, Manchester United have been very quiet in the transfer market. David Moyes and co. have made moves for players with the best of intentions, but they have oftentimes been misguided and impossible to close.
Take United’s pursuit of Cesc Fabregas, a Barcelona boy at heart and a former Arsenal captain. Attempting to sign him was a fool’s errand. The Spaniard is desperate to make it at the Nou Camp and still loves Arsenal. There was just no way.
And then there’s Thiago Alcantara, a player who batted his eyelashes at Manchester United before moving to Bayern Munich to partner up with his ex-Barca boss, Pep Guardiola. David Moyes couldn’t exactly have seen this one coming, but the time wasted on trying to sign Alcantara will surely be regarded as a mistake.
Given what’s gone before and the club’s struggles in the transfer market, the club is at risk of walking away empty handed when the window slams shut. But if United want to compete with Chelsea and Manchester City this summer, bringing in a marquee player (or two) is beginning to look essential.
But I can’t help but feel that Moyes and the United top brass have been biding their time, ready to make a move that will bring all the fans back on side.
I’m referring to The Star’s claim that Manchester United could yet seal a deal for Cristiano Ronaldo. Now that would be quite something.
They suggest that the Portuguese winger isn’t entirely happy with his position at Real Madrid and wants to finish his career at Old Trafford.
I’m sure United fans would be delighted to have him back.
With the Bale-to-Real Madrid move still looking likely at the time of writing, questions remain as to what would happen to Ronaldo, should Tottenham agree to sell.
After all, C-Ron currently plays out on the left, but if the Welsh wizard were to move to the club he could well lay claim to that position. This would force Ronaldo further up the pitch and decrease the opportunities he would have to run at players.
The questions, concerns and existential quandaries have led to speculation over Ronaldo’s future. It’s still hard to believe that he could be on his way back to Old Trafford, but should it happen, United would probably have the Premier League tied up for the next two-or-three seasons.
The Red Devils would have to splash an obscene amount of cash, but I’d argue that it would be worth it.
