Willian AnzhiJust when you thought Liverpool’s fun in the transfer market was over, the biggest story of all has just rolled through the rumour mill.

According to The Mirror, Brendan Rodgers is after a marquee signing to round out his squad and views Anzhi winger Willian as the perfect choice. This news is sure to create a welcome distraction from all the nonsense surrounding Luis Suarez.

The Reds have already made a number of smart, if somewhat underwhelming signings. After last year’s performance, the fans may well have had their fingers crossed that big name signings would barge their way through the transfer window onto the hallowed turf of Anfield.

As things currently stand, that hasn’t been the case. Instead, we’ve seen the likes of Kolo Toure, Iago Aspas, Luis Alberto and Simon Mignolet join the Reds. Whilst I expect the goalkeeper will fit in nicely, the other three may be gambles. Toure is getting on in years and who knows how well the two La Liga stars will adapt to the Premier League.

But if Liverpool’s interest in Willian is genuine, it will take the club’s transfer activity up into a different stratosphere. The Reds would certainly have to break the bank to make a deal happen.

We’ve seen from Brendan Rodger’s attempts to sign Atletico Madrid’s Diego Costa that the club can still afford to chase expensive, world-class talent. Unfortunately, Costa wasn’t interested, but Willian, another Brazilian, may be tempted to leave Russia for Premier League action.

Liverpool would have to offer more than they were willing to pay for Costa, to make a deal for Willian happen. After all, Anzhi shelled out £32m for the Brazilian just 8 months ago. The Russian club are flush with cash and have no real reason to sell. I’d expect Liverpool would have to pay the full £32m (if not more), to tempt the club to move the player on.

Interestingly enough, The Mirror claim that any potential deal is not reliant on what happens with Luis Suarez. It’s encouraging to see that the club can still exercise this kind of ambition.

The player himself is a crafty winger, with pace, tricks and real attacking flair. He’d represent a considerable upgrade on the likes of Stewart Downing.

This deal may seem a million miles away from happening at the moment, but should Brendan pull it off, the Reds will be extremely well placed the coming season.

What’s your take? Could Liverpool really agree a deal for this expensive Brazilian?

“The Russian club are flush with cash and have no real reason to sell” Who ever wrote that needs to do their homework. They’re selling their top players because the owner lost a lot of money and needs to make some of it back. £30m would be enough.

Clearly this guy hasn’t done his research before posting this article, Anzhi want to scale down on spending and want to sell off big wage earners.
