Why Manchester United should play the Cristiano Ronaldo long-game:

Cristiano RonaldoWant definitive proof that the Premier League is better than La Liga? Why not ask the opinion of Cristiano Ronaldo, the best modern player to have played in both Leagues (and somebody who is now surely among the top five players of all time).

He’d probably give a diplomatic answer, but in recent times it has grown increasingly clear where his allegiances lie. Check out the answer he gave when he was asked about his past:

“I really miss English football. For me, it was one of the best years in my career when I was there in Manchester United. Everyone knows that it is a club that is still in my heart and I really, really miss.” (Source: The Mirror)

You don’t exactly have to read between the lines here. Still, he did qualify his statement (otherwise he’d risk angering his paymasters and the Real Madrid fans):

“But now my life is in Spain. I am enjoying playing there too. Part of my life is there, but in the future we never know. I am really, really happy in the Spanish league.”

Really happy? Isn’t the man who labelled himself ‘sad’, last season? Looks like Cristiano has been experiencing a rollercoaster of emotions.

It’s hard to see why Ronaldo wouldn’t be happy, playing his football in sun-drenched, culture-rich Spain. He’s also playing with some of the very best players in the world and is treated like a legend by Madrid fans.

But the Premier League still provides some allure for the talented Portuguese winger. Maybe it’s the fact that there are 4-5 big teams in the Premier League, whilst there are only two in La Liga?

Whatever it is, it’s left the door open for a return to Manchester United. And wouldn’t it be something if David Moyes were able to capitalise on the winger’s nostalgia for all things English?

On the face of it, any move for Cristiano Ronaldo looks impossible. Manchester United would have to smash their transfer record to sign him. That’s unless they play a long-game.

Cristiano Ronaldo has two years left on his Real Madrid deal. If United wait a year, and he doesn’t sign a new deal, I’m sure Madrid will start to get jumpy. In two summer’s time, he’ll be available on a free.

This, of course, is wishful thinking. But it’s all United can really afford. Ronaldo clearly has an affinity for the club and may be willing to let his deal run down so he can return. Waiting will cost United nothing, but they could end up with a big prize.

What’s your take? Should Manchester United go in for Cristiano Ronaldo or wait and see what happens?
