Why are Liverpool fighting so hard to keep Luis Suarez?

Luis SuarezThe first line of a recent article from The Mirror, says: “Luis Suarez’s summer saga could turn messy”. Could turn?

This is a summer transfer saga that started messy and has only got worse. I would argue that Suarez has already irreparably damaged his reputation among Liverpool fans.

He’s gone from a Kop hero (despite all the misgivings that surround him) to a figure of disgust. Liverpool fans just can’t believe that a player who they backed to the hilt (when it would have been easy to feed him to the wolves) has betrayed their trust.

The way Suarez has behaved this summer paints a particularly poor picture of the man. Whilst nobody views Suarez as a whiter than white, he’s revealed his true colours this summer.  The way he’s used the Press to his advantage shows that he’s only out for himself.

He knows how his behaviour this summer would be interpreted by the fans that supported him throughout the last couple of years. This knowledge doesn’t seem to have prevented him from trying to force a move away from Liverpool.

So let’s go back to the article from The Mirror. It claims that Liverpool believe that Suarez is entitled to speak to clubs who bid £40m (which would trigger his release clause) for his services, but would not be forced to sell.

This sounds a little strange – but as nobody reading this site is likely to have access to Luis Suarez’s Liverpool contract, and the details of his release clause, it’s difficult to dispute.

Still, Suarez’s people believe that is the release clause is triggered, Liverpool could be forced into selling.

This just further muddies already dirty water. After everything that’s happened, why are Liverpool still fighting so hard to keep hold of a player who clearly wants to leave? Do we really want to see legal battles  rear their ugly head? This is Luis Suarez we’re talking about here.

If somebody bids £40m, stick in some re-sell clauses into his new contract and send him packing.

The sooner Liverpool resolve the situation this summer, the quicker they can get people in. The last thing Brendan Rodgers wants is to see his star man leave the club on deadline day. So let’s hope that it’s all tied up a month or so in advance.

And let’s hope that Brendan is willing to let go.

What’s your take? Is £40m enough for Luis Suarez?

It’s called getting the best price if they just came out saying they wanted to sell him they wouldn’t get even close to the amount they would get.

  • John says:

That’s obvious. Liverpool are fighting to maintain the credibility of the club. The principle that the club dictates things and not the players. The principle that there is a contract in place that cannot be overridden by a players whim. And finally to project the image that the club is a strong one to be taken seriously and not a selling club that can be bullied by a player. To bow down to Suarez and sell him without a fight would send entirely the wrong message to the type of high quality players the club is trying to attract.

  • redmike says:

They are not fighting hard to keep him, they are fighting hard to maintain his value at the highest level possible..

  • sidney says:

nothing less than 40m. Whether your feelings for him have changed for him or not he was still and still is the best striker in the prem; he willl only get better. While i think we are in a better position than at the end of the season to challenge for top four (squad wise) i feel keeping him will see our chances increase further.

  • Xile says:

1). He remains our best player
2). LFC does not want strengthen Arsenal or Chelsea, or any other English club for that matter
3). If a good offer came from Real, Bayern, PSG or any other foreign club, then I’m sure he’ll go.

It’s not just about the fee, but where he goes.

Lfc could take suarez to the cleaners moneywise and that is what they are angling to do. they are trying to force him to make a formal transfer request first of all, which may happen within the next 7 days who knows. if suarez does this he loses out on over £1m that he would expect to get if he stays. then lfc owners want £40m- £50m, as from my understanding the club do not want to sell him at all. The fans who half hate him now will soon turn if he stays like man city fans did with tevez when he went awol. Liverpool football club hold all the aces, not suarez bud.

  • Sheila Liddell says:

Selling Torres for 50m suggests to me Suarez, currently one if the best strikers in the world, is worth at least that much. Reason to keep him. Because he is one of the best strikers in the world! Sell him, how do we replace him? Reasons to sell.. I have never wanted a player at our club that doesn’t want to be there.

  • Red One says:

Hell NO £40 Mil???, would consider £80 mil though, if Bayle is worth that much, than Suarez is worth £100 easy!!!, Now go back to your Manure.

  • RAUL MYERS says:

I reckon Suarez stays at anfield for another season yes he has said a few things to the media which has been in my opinion slightly exaggerated. But most of the things that were said by him naturally any player would say the same. But on the other hand if he were to leave Liverpool then Madrid will be his destination not the emirates

    • Peter grayson says:

Raul im not a LIVERPOOL FC fan but i definately agree with you. I also think SUAREZ will stay at LIVERPOOL FC at least for another season it’s all media frenzy that that tries to change people’s view of a player

  • JJ says:

“Why are Liverpool still fighting so hard to keep hold of a player who clearly wants to leave?”

    1. Suarez was probably the best forward last season, and Liverpool need a player like him.

    2. If someone like Arsenal comes in and try to buy him, and he himself wants to leave, Liverpool will be willing to sell him, but only if the price is right, he will definitely not be cheap. He has 3 years left on his contract, so Liverpool is in a strong negotiation position, and I’m sure it will take close to 50 mill. to force Liverpool to sell.

If you own a nice car that your love, and someone comes to you, and tell you that he want’s to buy your car, but he will only pay half the price. You would ask him to go back to whatever mental hospital he had fled from, and stop wasting your time.

So I think that If Arsenal or any other club wants to buy Suarez, they must be willing to go all inn, and stop beating around the bush.

  • Sultz says:

Another reason is to keep the asking price high. If people know you want to sell something they’re more likely to offer less.

  • Marcus says:

Suarez is a fantastic player for club and country plus what good would it do him leaving the club? His daughter sings our anthem so if he goes her daughter’s heart’s gonna be broken. We are offering to give him an anger management course-which other clubs won’t. I doubt Arsenal are going to buy Suarez anyway and if he goes to Spain to get away from the media thats rubbish because the media is worse there! Also the refs in Spain aren’t strict at all, in one league game a player HEADBUTTED his opponent and the ref did NOTHING AT ALL!
So go shoot yourself or die in a hole, I don’t care just kill yourself if you think Suarez is going!

  • shardeYNWALFC4ever says:

Leave him on bench until his contract expires

LFC is what matters, YNWA, ever.

  • Peter grayson says:

I don’t that’ll be a good idea to keep him on the bench with his talent I’d throw him in the deep end all the time I don’t think emotions will affect a player like him he lives his his football he will bang in goals
