Why are Arsenal not splashing the cash this summer?

Arsene_Wenger2We are almost 7 weeks into the transfer window (not 11 days as some Gooners think) and we have signed one player on a free contract. Meanwhile, other clubs, including our rivals are making signings all around us.

In a summer where Wenger and the board were meant to be making moves to strengthen up the squad and enable us to compete for a trophy, it is simply not good enough that we fly out to Vietnam on pre-season, with no new additions to the first team other than an injury prone postie.

For a team who have made it clear that they have a £70m transfer budget available, they are really taking their time in getting players signed, when we are in desperate need of squad members at least.

Since the end of the season players like Jesus Navas, Radamel Falcao, Carlos Tevez, Mario Gomez, Victor Wayanama etc., have all been signed within a week of negotiating deals. On the other hand, we have to settle for the realisation that when it comes to transfers, we are absolutely inept at tying up a deal and it normally comes down to finances.

Whether you blame Arsene Wenger, Ivan Gazidis or Stan Kroenke it still doesn’t make it easier to endure the embarrassment that our transfer policy emits. There is no excuse whatsoever if we haven’t signed anyone in the next 53 days. With Kroenke and Gazidis both insisting funds need to be spent that only leaves Wenger to blame and rightly so in my opinion.

Wenger is a very clever man. That economics degree has worked wonders for the club in the past and the money genius does deserve praise for the fact that our club is financially stable and will be for a while.

Although I can agree this bodes well for the future, it is clear we have sacrificed the present moment to plan for a future that doesn’t exist yet and this worries me. If we wanted an amazing accountant as our team manager then this was a great success, but I think we all wanted a manager whose sole focus was football and Wenger hasn’t managed that. It has become clear that despite his immense intelligence Arsene can’t do both jobs, he has to choose between finance and football and then focus on that.

I personally think that when it comes down to the end of this transfer window people will really start to see that Wenger is at fault if we have lost out on players like Fellaini and Rooney for the sake of a couple of million pounds. It will be the Mata story repeated. I think Le boss has forgotten that it isn’t actually his money, it is the club’s and the fans money. We deserve to have a say on how it is spent and opinion on why we aren’t signing world class players.

Wenger gets £7.5 million a year for the (dis)pleasure of being our manager. That is wages of £150k a week. How on earth can he justify not breaking his wage structure of 100k a week to bring in good players when he accepts wages that are higher than any of our players? In this modern day, football is more money based and as a result you have to pay more in wages and fees. As with any business, you have to speculate to accumulate.

Another frustrating summer pans out and everyone else in the league continue to strengthen their teams and we sit and wait in the hope for a miracle but they don’t seem to come our way much at the moment.

I am hoping that Arsenal sign some players by September, or we really will be in trouble.

As always thanks for reading! What are your thoughts?

Never mind let it be with this stubborn prof. In a few years from now he be old and another coach will take his place spent the money, win trophies and he be a forgotten man. Hahaha

    • Johnson says:

Better still the fans show their anger by having a half full stadium then they won’t take us as stupid full with their empty promises.

  • Arsene Wenger says:

Of course we are looking for quality and not quantity.
We have values at arsenal fc and we need to keep the stability in our squad.
Don’t forget we are unbeaten in our last ten league games so we must be careful not to
    Unbalance the team.
I am pleased to have bendtner & Santos back at the club, who both will give us cover & depth in our squad and diaby is back in training so it is like having 3 new signings…. ha ha ha ha

  • Tito says:

Agree with you 100%. Negotiations for players could have started 7 weeks ago and deals done & dusted the day the transfer window officially opened. This just shows the real intent of aw signing players. So far he has tricked the fans by under bidding on players such as bender and Suarez. I ask the question why hasn’t he home back with a higher bid instead just left it at that???? It’s just to fool the gullible fans in to thinking that he mr wenger is serious about buying quality. It’s a joke to see akb’s getting excited about his fake bidding and this game he is playing because they are so gullible and believe he cannot play us fans this way as the he so great and the sum shines out his A***.
Deep down all arsenal fans knows the little stingy C*** isn’t buying any class and he is repeating the same pattern of seasons past. Just take a look at how quickly he bought in Nacho Monreal which proves he can sign a player in lightning speed when he wants to, so stop kidding yourselves and believing the hype of the best media spin team in European football that is arsenal backroom staff. Higuaims saga was successful enough to get the season tickets sold and all has gone quiet on that side now hasn’t it, no bid was Ever made to Real Madrid for Higuain as Perez rightly said and if he was lying I’m sure wenger or gazidis would have come out to say so and back their case but nothing from them because it was all smoke and mirrors to sell tickets, they got what they wanted in the end.

I hope my analysis is wrong but I believe it isn’t and we will sell at least one of our key players and I feel it is Koscielny to make some profit for Kroenke the biggest C*** in the premier league, even song was forced out last season to make this guy money.

Please wake up to the reality and conspiracy of the owners and runners of this club

How do you know that all the finished transfer deals were done in a week? Arsenal signed Podolski early last year because they were months in negotiations.

Wenger CAN justify why his wages are higher (even though it’s not him controlling it), because good coaches are far, far rarer, and more precious than good players. He is well worth the cash. How many good strikers are there today? Not many, but far more than the number of SAFs and Wengers left.

People who think that Wenger is an old senile fool are pretty damn arrogant for doing so. Man has decades of football experience, playing or coaching, than any of us fans.

    • Kevvy says:

He’s never won the Champions League though has he? Wenger would have been sacked long ago at any other club, he’s living on his reputation gained early at Arsenal when he brought new ideas and opened new areas for scouting players. He also had David Dein to drive him forward, do the deals, and share the downsides of any cock ups. These competitive advantages are now defunct and he can’t cut it on his own. We have been very lucky in the past few seasons to maintain CL football.
The team needs new blood now, we’ve been promised it and so far diddly squat. I can’t believe Arsenal are negotiating an extension. I only bought my season ticket for next year because I thought it would be Wenger’s last.

      • MJB says:

Another impatient moron who seems to think football transfers are done overnight.
@Kevvy you need to stop being wound-up by all the media blather and posturing and ‘ tapping-up’ and live in the real world. You may expect things at the click of a mouse but REAL business aint like that.

For what Wenger to be fired ??

Wenger is giving what Arsenal board wants, PROFIT…….. Wenger is paid for that……

  • mike hock says:

    same old arsenal always creeping

  • basil says:

Wenger has the habit of doing transfers when the windows are closed but when open he gets confused.

  • Dean says:

You are 100% correct on that we need world class players now or some one has to go coz to say we have £70 million all these months and all we get is a player on a free with injury prone this can’t happen for another season it’s bin to long. I think something needs to happen at arsenal to get the boards attention coz enough s enough

  • Jim says:

It would take me over 350 years on my present salary to earn what Arsene Wenger earns in one year..yet I’m quite sure that even with my limited knowledge of football (I’ve been an Arsenal supporter for 44 years), with a £70 million budget I would have bought a well known striker..an experienced defensive midfielder, and a top class goalkeeper..and all for less than £60 million, and also brought in a couple more players on free transfers, or loan deals..and I’m quite sure that most Arsenal fans could have done the same..so come on..whoever is holding the purse strings..either use them or give them to me to use.

  • khriezoasou says:

Yeah that’s absolutely right. Wenger he himself thinks he was clever but he is nothing but stupid stubborn etc. We will never win any trophy under Wenger again , his time is up. He and Evan are using us fans. Wait and see on d transfer deadline day he will bought some cheap France second choice player. And finally he will said there was not a quality players in the market. In 13/14 seasons we will below spuds and Liverpool. 6 or 7 places. Wenger needs to step down. He don’t deserve to extend his contract. As if he thinks he was the best manager heh…my foot.

  • Greybeard says:

Firstly, you should understand that Arsene Wenger is the football manager and the head coach. He may advise the board which players he would like to add to the squad and who he can manage without. However, it is not he who carries out negotiations or approves contractual conditions or even holds the purse strings, That will be done by a team of lawyers and accountants and officers of the board.
Secondly, if you’re crying out for only the BEST available footballers to be brought in, you will understand that they have a BIG team of advisors (including lawyers and accountants) who must be convinced that signing for Arsenal is a PROFITABLE move – they may take their time doing this
Thirdly, the player’s availability must be unquestionable regarding being released from their current club – which means that the manager, board, accountants and lawyers at that club must be satisfied that the sale is good for that club and PROFITABLE: They will want to be assured that the other deals that THEY want to make will be advanced by this particular deal.
Fourthly, because Arsenal do not release any details about the players for whom they are negotiating, until the ink has dried on the contracts (which will have been through all of the aforesaid that have their snouts in the trough), NOBODY knows what negotiations are ongoing about WHO!
Therefore it is not possible to know who is being sought after or how long any negotiations might take – so why bust a gasket about it? We will know when the deals have been done and not before!

  • Harry Barracuda says:

So you want them to spend no matter who it’s on? We were never going to get Falcao or Gomez and the other two aren’t worth shit.

    Another moronic, bleating blogger.

  • Mark says:

Very good response to another ill informed bit of nonsense. Everybody is an expert – except AW apparently! There is no loyalty in the game these days ( that includes most of the fans ) and I suspect buying players is not quite as easy as it might appear.

  • Obinna Egonu says:

Alot can stil happen from now til August ending! Stil optimistic!!!

  • carlo says:

That’s the best blog i’ve read in a while. Absolutely spot on Niki…someone should actually tell him its not his money. I don’t know what hes waiting for. All I can say is if you’re waiting on 3 or 4 top quality signings which is what we need to compete, don’t hold your breath….

  • TAJ AZIZ says:

Wait till you are relagated to mid table liverpool fans can tell u.at least they won fa n llg cup 9 years n counting win 0000 with wenger economics

  • Mike says:

This is silly. Even though the transfer window technically opens at the end of the regular season, you CANNOT sign a player who is bound to a contract until July 1st. So, really, within the summer window there are two separate and distinct transfer windows. The first, part A, is for free agents that can be signed at the end of the regular season through the end of the window; the second, part B, is for all those NON-free agents who can ONLY be signed after July 1st until the end of the window.

So, while there were TONS of free agents that were targets that have been available since the end of the EPL season (NOT), we are actually 2 weeks into the transfer window that any of us really care about. Why do we only care about the second of the two windows, you might ask? BECAUSE, the only players we care about are bound to a contract. Hence ALL this discussion about ridiculous, but necessary, transfer fees.

Now that’s been cleared up, the anticipation is extremely high in this summer’s transfer window, part B, because we have money and we need to close some deals. ABC, baby. Who will it be? I’d be shocked if we don’t at least get one quality signing, if only to convince our current squad and potential future targets that we are willing to bring in players that will allow us to compete for trophies. Surely that’s not lost on Wenger and the Board. Surely.

  • Gbenga Odesola says:

I strongly believe that Arsenal does not have this cash available. The club is just raising the money, that was why they forced the season ticket holders to renew their ticket in May instead of June/July; Arsenal would have raised £18m from season tickets renewal.
Tour again! !! !!! Don’t be deceived, it is also part of the money raising drive. Fans you want to see Higuain, Rooney, Fellani or Suarez; you might wait for a long time as no money to compete in the market. I see a situation where Arsenal would let fans believe they want to buy but clubs are not selling. Remember the same thing happened last year with Mata, Hazard, e.t.c. and the club ended up buying average quality payers. The same is about to happen again. Watch Out Fans! The board knows the fans has no choice and are going no where.

  • lexyl says:

Ignorance is never an excuse. Comparing SAF and Wenger is ridiculous. Let me point out the facts for u 1. SAF only went a season without a trophy while Mr. Wenger #economist, went 8yrs without winning anything 2. SAF recruits top players to compete while Mr. Wenger again, likes selling our established players to gain some cash 3. SAF is a competitor, a winner and never settles for less while Mr. Wenger was once a winner but not anymore and settles for less 4. SAF competes regardless of other clubs stability while Mr. Wenger prefers the slow approach by waiting for other club’s managers to be sacked or retired to compete #verysad. Please, correct me if am wrong but ? strongly doubt it.

  • cin says:

    Bull shit………

Don’t talk about 70M…… It seems like just for cheating fans what they have been doing for long.

I personally don’t think Arsenal will spend big money for good players………

Arsenal is just standing for more profit and CL birth.
