What does the future hold for Tom Cleverley?

Tom CleverleyNewly appointed Manchester United manager David Moyes is reported to have held discussions with England midfielder Tom Cleverley  to inform him that he must improve if he wishes to have a future at Old Trafford.

At 23 years old, Moyes is reported to have held talks with the midfielder over his Old Trafford future, with several clubs reportedly interested in securing his services. Cleverley came to prominence when making his competitive debut in the 2011 Community Shield victory over Manchester City (3-2).

The midfielder played a vital part in Manchester United’s second half come back after being brought on to replace Michael Carrick.

The former Wigan midfielder (loanee) was earmarked by Sir Alex Ferguson upon the initial retirement of Paul Scholes, as his long term successor, however his performances have been somewhat inconsistent over the past couple of seasons, and Moyes is wary of the market interest from various Premier League clubs.

Whilst Manchester United would be reluctant to let a player, whom they have invested lots into, leave the club- his inconsistent performances and lack of progression at the club could ultimately lead to the midfielders departure.

Another reason as to why the midfielder could be on the move is the increasing speculation surrounding Barcelona’s Thiago Alcantara, and his apparently imminent arrival at Old Trafford. Whilst there are some at the club who believe the two could function in a midfield together, there are fears that Cleverley would feel undermined if the Spanish Under-21 international did join the club.

The new Chief Executive Ed Woodward could be enticed into selling the under performing midfielder if he continues to show a lack of progress. Swansea’s signing of England under 21 international Jonjo Shelvey from Liverpool for £5 million, has awakened some at the club to the potential market value of a player like Cleverley if he were to move on.

A player of his ability and potential would certainly cost something in the region of £10-12million and these funds could be re-invested into the youth system at the club.

The talks between the midfielder and David Moyes were said to have been productive, but time will tell as to whether the once dubbed “future Paul Scholes” can really go on to fulfil his potential at the club.
