Manchester United fans: would you prefer Gareth Bale or Cristiano Ronaldo?

Image for Manchester United fans: would you prefer Gareth Bale or Cristiano Ronaldo?

Gareth BaleWhilst Manchester United have been pretty slow during this summer’s transfer window, this hasn’t stopped the club from picking up links to some big names. Most of the attention over the last month or so, has been on Barcelona wonderkid Thiago Alcantara. Unfortunately, it looks as though he’ll end up playing his football with Bayern Munich.

Still, it’s not all bad. Manchester United have been linked to both Gareth Bale and Cristiano Ronaldo this summer. If the Red Devils were to sign either of these players, it would be the biggest deal the club ever secured. It would be a signing that would surely secure another season’s worth of success.

Heck, it may even be enough to help Manchester United crack the Champions League. Suffice to say, if United were to sign either Bale or Ronaldo, fans would have plenty of reason to be excited.

I realise that these are ‘fairy tale’ signings. Even talking about them seems a little churlish. But stranger things have happened.

The Daily Mail suggest that United are willing and capable of making a deal for one of these players happen. They’ve jumped on David Moyes’ suggestion that he’s keen to sign a ‘stellar player’, by suggesting that Bale and Ronaldo were the kind of players that Moyes had in mind.

Whether this is the case, is not entirely clear. None of us know for sure which players Moyes considers to be ‘stellar’. Maybe he considered Alcantara to be ‘stellar’? Still, United’s chief executive Ed Woodward’s comments will give fans reason for hope:

‘We haven’t got money burning a hole in our pocket but we have got a strategy on player purchases and if David wants to go after a stellar player he can do that.’

Both Bale and Ronaldo would cost upwards of £80m. To sign them, United would have to smash their transfer record.

But it’d be worth it. Particularly if United went after Bale.

As things currently stand, Ronaldo is a considerably better player than Bale. He’s world football’s second best player. But he’s 28-years-old. By the end of the next contract he signs, his value will have decreased considerably.

Bale’s value, on the other hand, will only grow and grow. He’s the real deal and he’s going to get even better over the next two-or-three seasons. If United capture him and are able to bare witness to this progression, success is sure to follow.

They’d have to break the bank to sign him, but they’d make a fair amount of money from shirt sales and the on-the-pitch success he’d generate. He’d also have considerable re-sell value if United needed to cash-in at some stage.

Despite Ronaldo’s links to Old Trafford, Bale provides more of an appeal. Any deal for the player would be near-impossible to secure, but you can’t fault a guy for dreaming.

What’s your take? Who would you rather see at Old Trafford? Cristiano Ronaldo or Gareth Bale? Can Manchester United really afford to compete for these stars?
