Is this Arsenal target REALLY worth £20m?

BernardWhen rumours concerning Arsenal and Bernard first started to appear, fans were split. Some were excited to see their club in the running for a talented Brazilian player with a big future, whilst others were frustrated to see Arsene Wenger chase another ‘kid’.

After all, Bernard is only 20-years-old and has very little experience on the big stage to speak of.

But this is no ordinary youngster. After all, most young talents don’t come with a £20m price-tag. He also has five caps for his country – which is no small feat given the number of genuinely brilliant players his nation produces.

This Brazilian play-maker is inordinately talented for his age. The fact that there’s so much speculation surrounding his future more or less speaks for itself.

The player himself hasn’t been afraid to face the Press when the opportunity has arisen. Recently, he told the world just how many clubs are interested in his services:

“There are offers from English football, Shakhtar and Porto. I’ll keep working until the board decides something about the transfer. I don’t know what can happen with me, but if I leave, I know I will have done my job.” (Source: The Metro)

It’s frustrating that he doesn’t name the English clubs involved. Given all the stories, you can’t help but wonder if Arsenal are one of them.

Despite his age, signing Bernard would be a big step forward for Arsenal. The pint-sized midfielder (he’s just 5 foot 4 inches tall) has developed an excellent all round game. His pace and balance is immaculate, so he’s a real threat when he’s running with the ball at his feet.

He may not be a prolific goal-scorer, but he does get into dangerous positions and he is capable of causing defences problems. Besides, given a couple of years, he may well add goals to his game.

Like Santi Cazorla, he’s also two-footed. These two footballers playing alongside each other would surely be a sight to behold.

£20m is a lot of money for a young player, but in this case, the price-tag seems to be justified. In two or three years time, Bernard may well be up there with the very best midfielders in world-football. If the Gunners secure him on a long-term contract, he’ll also provide them with excellent re-sell value.

This one looks like a goer. Let’s hope Arsene Wenger can fight off the competition.

What’s your take? Should the Gunners be in the market for Bernard, or do they have other priorities?
