Manchester United have been fairly slow movers thus far in the summer transfer market. You get the feeling, however, that new boss David Moyes will be keen to stamp his mark on the team with some signings of his own.
Sir Alex Ferguson has made some of world football’s all time top signings. It’s time for Moyes to prove that he’s in the same League.
For the last two-or-three seasons, Manchester United fans have been calling out for their club to sign a new midfielder. Anxiety over Paul Scholes’ (permanent) retirement, Ryan Gigg’s age, the ineffectiveness of Anderson and Darren Fletcher’s condition has only increased over the last year or so.
Shinji Kagawa did move to Old Trafford last summer (and will likely improve in his second season with the club), but you get the feeling that there’s more to be done in this department. If David Moyes is to make his mark in the summer transfer window, the midfield looks like a good place to start.
This brings me to The Express‘ claim that Manchester United have triggered Thiago Alcantara’s £17m release clause. If this is true, it must surely go down as one of the signings of the summer.
Consider this: Bayern Munich spent 37m euros to sign Mario Gotze (who is just 21-years-old). Real Madrid spent 27m euros on Isco (another 21-year-old). I would argue that Alcantara is just as good as either of these players.
Indeed, when it comes to flair, Alcantara outstrips the both of them. He may not be quite as well rounded as Gotze, but it’s clear he’s set for an absolutely massive future.
From what we’ve seen this summer, this youngster is already well on the way to becoming a world-class talent. Anybody who saw his performance in the 2013 UEFA European Under-21 Championship Final (where he scored a perfect hat-trick), will attest to that.
The fact that he’s available for just £17m is minor miracle. The player himself will surely jump at the opportunity for regular football (there’s way too much competition at the Nou Camp). You also get the feeling that he’d be a good fit at Manchester United, who could use his attacking endeavour and unpredictability.
If the stories are true, David Moyes may well have pulled off one of the best signings of the summer. I’d say he’s off to a pretty strong start.
What’s your take? Are you looking forward to seeing Thiago in a United shirt?
