Can Liverpool afford to lose Daniel Agger?

Daniel AggerBarcelona are on the hunt for a new defensive talent this summer. Whilst the Spanish powerhouse has a brilliant forward line and the best midfield in club football, the defense has always been an area of weakness for them.

Whilst Jordi Alba and Daniel Alves are two of the best centre-backs in world football, Barca’s centre-back pairing is slightly more shaky.

Gerard Pique is imperious on his day, but often inconsistent. Carlos Puyol isn’t getting any younger. As he enters the autumn of his career, he seems to lose a yard of pace every season.

Javier Mascherano has often had to step in as a centre-back (even though he is typically a defensive midfielder). Whilst he has done a good job, I don’t think he’ll be viewed as a long-term solution.

Given the circumstances, it’s unsurprising that Barca have been in the market for world-class defenders like PSG’s Thiago Silva and up-and-coming defensive talents like Roma’s Marquinhos.

Both players have huge price-tags and Barca don’t have a lot of money to spend following their splurge on Brazilian forward Neymar. As such, they’ve had to re-assess their targets and head in another direction.

Which brings me to the following story: according to The Mirror, Barca now view Liverpool’s Daniel Agger as the ideal solution to their defensive problems.

This is likely to irk Liverpool fans, who already have to deal with Luis Suarez’s antics this summer. Whilst Agger’s Liverpool career has been tainted with injury, he has been able to establish himself as a firm fan favourite.

His all action defensive performances are easy on the eye. He’s an extremely smart footballer, who reads the game well and has the energy and drive to pull off spectacular interceptions and saving tackles.

Despite this, I can’t help but wonder if the time’s right for Agger to move on. Despite his injury and form issues over the last two-three years, Agger’s stock remains high. If Liverpool sell now, they’d receive a big fee for his sale.

Whilst Agger played well on numerous occasions last season, he was also highly inconsistent. At one stage, he even apologised for a particularly poor performance over Twitter:

“I agree with most of you. My performance in the last 10 minutes was NOT good enough. It’s as simple as that!!!!! But thank you for letting me know.”@DanielAgger

It wasn’t the only performance of the season that merited an apology.

That’s not to say I wouldn’t be sad to see him go, just that he’s not as irreplaceable as it may seem. If Barcelona are willing to offer a good price for the big Dane, I hope Brendan Rodgers will give it due consideration.
