£20m or £25.5m: How much do Liverpool have to spend to make this deal happen?

Henrikh MkhitaryanBefore this summer very few people could even spell Henrikh Mkhitaryan’s  name. Now that very name is on the minds of more or less every Liverpool fan. But will the Armenian ace eventually make his move to Anfield?

It strikes me that there’s so much speculation regarding Mkhitaryan because Liverpool’s midfield was so lackluster last season.

Yes, Steven Gerrard still has plenty of get-up and go, but the Liverpool legend isn’t getting any younger. The Reds may have to face up to the fact that their captain will begin to offer less and less over the coming years.

Then there’s Joe Allen, a youngster who promised much when he made he followed Brendan Rodgers from Swansea City to Liverpool, but has offered very little. Allen has faced his share of injury problems, but has largely disappointed when he’s had an opportunity to prove himself.

Indeed, Liverpool have very little attacking flair to offer in the centre-of-the-park. This must surely be why Henrikh Mkhitaryan provides such an appeal.

The attacking midfielder (who happens to be a three time Armenian Player of the Year – beating off staunch competition, I’m sure) is nothing if he’s not effective. Last season he knocked home 26 goals from in 39 games. Most strikers would kill for those kind of figures.

He’s a smart footballer, with a big engine, who knows how to position himself so that he can cause problems to opposition defenders. He certainly looks capable of making the step up from the Ukrainian League (he’s currently with Shakhtar Donetsk), to join a top Premier League club.

How much he’d cost the Reds is an interesting question. According to Shakhtar’s Chief Executive, Sergei Palkin he could leave for just £19.8m if he forces the move, or £25.5m if everybody plays by the rules:

“Mkhitaryan doesn’t have a release clause in his contract, but it does spell out the penalties for unilateral termination of the contract, which is equal to $30m (£19.8m),” the British-trained accountant explained.

If Mkhitaryan wants to terminate the contract, he must pay Shakhtar $30m and go to a club that he likes. If we go in a civilized manner and sell the player, and in doing so he does not break the contract, the value we place on him is 30million euros (£25.5m).” (Source: The Mirror)

Does this suggest that Liverpool could pay Mkhitaryan the £20m necessary to break his contract and make a £5.5m saving? Perhaps – it’s not entirely clear what the legalities are in this situation.

Either way, I’d like to see Brendan go for it. Borussia Dortmund are already thought to have made a bid, so the sooner Liverpool register their interest the better. Let’s hope the Reds can pull it off – even if it means playing a little dirty.

What’s your take? Should Liverpool look to sign Henrikh Mkhitaryan? How much will he cost?

pliz xplain ur line up im in ze moon ?

  • kihenja says:

i thought he was to be signed by Borusia Dortmund.we can look for an established defender instead. lfc shud also push for benteke and ithink he can play as an offensive mid or as a lone striker instead of wasting ur time on a player who have multiple owners .

    • Anthony Cowan says:

totally agree about Benteke but not in midfield. I think if we get him he will score AT LEAST 25 league goals. The big thing is of course as you mentioned the defence aswell because we haven’t replaced Carra as Toure is just back up and Skrtell is not wanted it seems and the same goes for Coates.

    • Fuwee says:

      I’m within u !

  • Ali says:

As the season ended, we were told 25 million was available… Selling Carroll and Shelvey has generated 21 million… I would like to see all this money and more if possible invested in adding strong 1st team players and not just squad additions… HM fits that bill… Buy him!

  • G says:

Obviously we can’t be tha interested in him or we would have put a bid in by now, I know it’s good tha we invest in youngsters and bring them through but we need top players NOW and this guy has the experience and is also YOUNG so what you waiting for BR go get your man and make LFC FANS PROUD

  • Afangson says:

I personally need henrik from to make things happen in Lfc

  • Martinmarx says:

I don’t want us to “play it a little dirty”. It’s a disgrace you even suggest it in an official post like this. Sure you’d be OK with Arse or the Chavs to playing it a little dirty to lure Luis away from us? Hypocrisy indeed.

  • Jose says:

It is now a month when lfc want this player but still no good news why?

  • Johnson says:

Brandan should act fast by signing this guy regardless of the cost if he realy want trophies for Liverpool fc Henryk is the right guy.

  • Redsim says:

Mkhitaryan is on his way to Dortmund. FSG still don’t understand that to get world class players LFC have to act fast and pay big otherwise they’ll go elsewhere.

    • Chalmers says:

FSG do understand but they don’t want to act fast and get their man as that means spending THEIR money !

  • Albert Hagan says:

I get want this deal over and done with.
Its either we get him or move for another target. I believe we can get Erickson and anderwireld for the 25 mill we could spend on this guy. The quicker we get our transfers in and out the better.if we get the the two ajax players we’ve killed two birds with one stone.

  • Wolex says:

Pls fans we should stop begging rodgers whenever he forked up,he will face d consequence he knows, he will be fired let him ask kenny that was once called king wat happened to him.

  • Geopher says:

Lfc need a good attacking midfielder like henrick mkhitaryan for £25.5m

  • LFC_Fan says:

I believe we are still paying the price for KK (& DC) howlers. 2 years back FSG paid 35mn for donkey Carroll, 20mn for Downing before July & 16-20mn for Henderson in first week of June. The football ignorant yanks have burnt their hands once in haste & now are too cautious about being bluffed.

However, they should understand that their fundamental strategy was wrong – only fools ‘ll pay big for English players these days. Top talents, particularly if U25, are not cheap these days. If HM can fulfill his potential, BVB can sell him for double in a years time. For this type of players, you have to move very fast – get, set, negotiate & sign-off.

I think we ‘ll loose Eriksson as well, trying to be too smart.

    • Chalmers says:

They didn’t spend their money! The money came from Chelsea buying Torres. FSG never put their hands into their pockets – It’s not their style. We buy when we sell…

      • Jon says:

The reds are gonna play some nice footy next season. I cant wait for preston to see aspas and alberto, i reckon toure will have stuff to prove and sturridge and coutinho will be too much for teams. Steve g will be back after a nice few months off pain free. And reina will pull his socks up or mig will play. I’m optimistic about this season.

  • Edwin Musekwa says:

Let BR go for him if there is a chance to get him we need creativity
