Christian BentekeAs things currently stand, Liverpool are in a remarkably bad situation. After all, they’ve just enjoyed an absolutely dreadful season and their best player is currently embroiled in wild speculation regarding his future.

The man I’m referring to, of course, is Luis Suarez. The Uruguayan forward was in sensational form last season and without him, the Reds would have been in trouble. But that’s the reality that Brendan Rodgers may be facing next season.

As if things weren’t bad enough, Liverpool may find next season even harder. Suarez was one of maybe two players in Rodger’s side capable of a moment of magic. His exit, should it happen, will reveal exactly how average Liverpool football club has become.

That may be difficult for Reds fans to hear, but even the most blindly optimistic among them can’t be satisfied with their current position.

If Liverpool are to build and improve over the course of next season, Rodgers will have to spend very smartly indeed. Signing a striker partner for Daniel Sturridge may be the first order of the day, but who’s up to the task?

According to the Daily Mail, the Reds are considering a move for Aston Villa’s main man, Christian Benteke – but only if Suarez moves on this summer.

The big, bulky Belgium has proven his worth of the course of the last year and attracted interest from the likes of Atletico Madrid, Spurs, Arsenal, Manchester City and Borussia Dortmund. That’s an impressive list of suitors. Wouldn’t it be something if Liverpool swooped in at the last moment and plucked him up?

Despite being just 22-years-old, Benteke slammed home (slammed being the operative word – boy can he hit them!) 19 goals in 34 games last season. That’s all the more impressive given the pressure that Villa were under for the majority of the year. But Benteke never looked like a man embroiled in a relegation battle. He looked like a man who sincerely enjoyed his football.

Sources like The Star have previously claimed that Benteke may be available for just £15m. That’s a good price for a player who clearly has a big future ahead of him. If the Reds are interested, however, they’ll do well to act quickly. After all, there’s bound to be some competition for his signature this summer.

Whether he’ll be able to replace Suarez on his own is certainly a question worth asking. As it goes, however, signing Benteke would be a good start.

What’s your take? Would Christian Benteke be a worthy replacement for Luis Suarez?

Benteke has had a great season, but I can’t see him doing it next season. And Villa want £40 million pound ( Who are they trying to kid ) He’s got strength that’s it,not skilful or fast…

Benteke is an average player, did we not learn from carrol.he was just on form next season and my bet is that he will score only 10 goals next season

In a word yes! To be fair 7th place was poor. However, you must do your research better. It was not Suarez that got us there. If you take out his goals scored, Liverpool would still of finished ….. Yes 7th. So lets cut the crap, and let him go. If we spend the money well, we get a stronger team, end of storey. (the media hype surronding Liverpool being in trouble without him is to be frank BOL**X)

  • Martyreds says:

We really ought to be looking at Mario Gomez or Huiguin for the strikers positions, the first being a proven goal scorer and the second for his skill and youth!
