Gonzalo HiguainOver the last couple of weeks, all the speculation around Arsenal’s summer spending seems to be revolving around Gonzalo Higuain.

We’ve heard so much about Arsenal’s supposed interest in Fiorentina’s Stevan Jovetic, that this change in target has come as a bit of shock. Still, I think most fans will agree that this is a step up.

Higuain, Real Madrid’s Argentinian ace is one of the best strikers in world football. At just 26-years-old, he’s already enjoyed seven good seasons at the Bernabeu. He’s also already managed to establish a fantastic scoring record with Real, something that’s sure to be attractive to Arsene Wenger.

He can’t have been satisfied seeing the likes of Olivier Giroud and Gervinho repeatedly fluffing their lines and missing opportunities last season. Arsenal are a club that was once home to the likes of Thierry Henry and Dennis Bergkamp. Signing Higuain would be like a return to the good old days.

But let’s not get dewy eyed and nostalgic. Not when for the first time in a long while, the future looks to be bright for the Gunners.

According to Spanish source Marca (via CaughtOffside), Arsenal are ‘on track’ to sign Higuain. It’s even claimed that Arsene Wenger has met with the Real Madrid man’s father to discuss the move.

It’s thought that £25.5m could be enough to secure the Argentine’s signature. Normally, this kind of money would rule out an Arsenal move. After all, it’s over £10m more than their record signing.

But this summer I think we’re going to see an altogether new side of Arsenal in the transfer market. The Gunners have secured a number of commercial deals and have also released a fair amount of deadweight. After years of pinching the pennies, Wenger could finally be about to splash the cash.

And who better to do this on than Higuain? He’s scored 122 goals for Real Madrid and has even nabbed 20 goals in 32 appearances for his national side. I think it’s fair to say that he’s proven at every level. Maybe it’s time for him to try his luck in the Premier League?

Arsenal could certainly use a player with his finishing ability. If he arrives at the Emirates next season, the race for the title could end up being very interesting indeed.

What’s your take? Should the Gunners really splash £25.5m on Gonzalo Higuain?

He is one of the pieces of the jigsaw that has been missing, an out and out striker that takes most of his chances rather than miss them like Gervinho and others do. With 2 or 3 additional signings we will be serious challengers on all fronts next season and firmly put the little team of North London back in their places. However if the lose Bale it will be a natural progression down as he was the only player that kept them in 5th.

Higuaine is made to measure for us. Not only is he a goal every 2 game striker, he is very much a player who participates in the build up play. At 26 he has a possible 5 years at the emirates. If we want to challenge for the league we need players like Higuaine. If not then Lewandowski could win us the league
