Newcastle football club are now in an interesting and precarious position. Last season was nothing short of a disaster for the Magpies and it would surprise nobody if the club’s best players were currently weighing up their position.

Let’s face it, Newcastle were lucky to avoid relegation. If Reading and QPR hadn’t been so entirely dire from the start, there’s a good chance Alan Pardew’s side would have gone down. As it is, a victory over QPR in the penultimate game of the season and a 41 point tally, was enough to secure them another season of Premier League action.

But will next season be more of the same, or can Pardew inspire his side out of its current slump?

If he’s going to pull off this difficult task, he’ll need to keep hold of his star players and then add a couple more smart purchases to the squad.

The former may well prove to be more difficult than the latter. After all, players like Hatem Ben Arfa, Tim Krul and Yohan Cabaye aren’t likely to be happy with slugging it out at the bottom of the Premier League. Their ambitions are likely to be a little more lofty.

Indeed, Cabaye has already spoken about the potential of switching clubs. Check out these quotes that have surfaced since being away on International duty: “For the moment I am at Newcastle. You never know what happens in football.”

When asked directly about Manchester United, he responded: “Yes, of course, I like this club for a long time, I like what they do… They are always well placed amongst the big clubs. Yes, for sure, it could be an interesting challenge but like I said for the moment, there is nothing concrete and I am still at Newcastle.” (Source: The Mirror)

Of course, there’s nothing all that definitive here. Who wouldn’t be interested by the concept of playing for Manchester United? Newcastle fans may well feel that his words have been twisted all out of shape.

But I have to say, I like the idea of Cabaye at Manchester United. The Frenchman could fit neatly into the void left by Paul Scholes’ absence. He certainly has the same ability to influence attacks and pick out a killer pass. David Moyes may also find his ability over set-pieces intriguing.

If Manchester United are on the hunt for a midfielder this summer, they’d do well to head to Newcastle. With Yohan ‘listening’ for offers, he could be just what the club needs to help defend their title.

What’s your take? Would Yohan Cabaye be a good fit at Old Trafford?
