Wayne RooneyI, like most fans, have never been the biggest support of Alisher Usmanov. Indeed, I’m not too much enamoured by any of Arsenal’s share-holders or the rest of the top-brass at the club. They all seem like a thoroughly dislike-able, unrelatable bunch.

So it feels a little weird to find myself agreeing with the Russian billionare, a man who mostly uses the media as a tool to further his aims within the club.

Arsenal’s 30% shareholder recently told he Press that he views Wayne Rooney as a potentially great addition for the Gunners. Check out these quotes: “He is a great player and [joining Arsenal] would be great for Rooney, and Arsenal too.” (Source: The Mail)

Usmanov is certainly right to claim that it’d be a good move for Arsenal. But I’m not so sure that it’d  be so beneficial for Wayne Rooney. After all, he’d be stepping down from the Premier League’s current champions to join a team that struggles to earn Champions League football each season. He may also have to take a pay-cut to do so. That doesn’t sound so swell to me.

But maybe playing for a club like Arsenal would provide some appeal for Rooney? After all, he’d be the club’s number one striker (which currently isn’t the case at Old Trafford) and he’d be playing in front of some incredibly gifted, technical midfielders.

Arsenal could certainly use somebody with Rooney’s ease, grace and goal-scoring ability upfront. Ever since Robin Van Persie left the club last summer, the Gunners have lacked threat upfront. However you try to cut it, Olivier Giroud just isn’t Arsenal standard, he’s too slow and his touch isn’t great.

Rooney isn’t exactly nippy, but he’s a good runner, with bags of energy and great ability on the ball. Best of all, he’s capable of scoring some truly spectacular goals and producing moments of magic. There are very few players in this Arsenal team who can currently offer this.

There would be issues with his salary. Arsenal wont get him on the cheap. But if the Gunners are serious about competing next summer, they’ll have to spend and spend big.

Usmanov, for once I’m with you. Rooney would be an excellent purchase for Arsenal. Let’s just hope that Arsene Wenger agrees!

What’s your take? Would Wayne Rooney be a good addition at the Emirates, or is he just too expensive?
