Arsenal odds on to sign keeper: but is he the right choice?

Julio CesarIf Arsenal are to challenge for silverware next season, they’ll need to build from the back. For so long now, the Gunners have found themselves hamstrung by their defense and by their goalkeepers. If Arsene Wenger is to bring success back to the club, he’ll need to address the goal-keeping situation before the transfer window slams shut.

Whilst both Vito Mannone and Lukasz Fabianski seem like good guys (check out this interview with Mannone and Theo Walcott and have a look at the images of Fabianski celebrating as Arsenal grabbed fourth place last season) neither of them install fans with too much confidence.

Wojciech Szczesny may be the best of the bunch, but he too has his own issues. The Polish shot-stopper struggled to find his feet last year, lost all his confidence and spent a lot of time on the bench.

When he first broke through, he was thought to be Arsenal’s big hope for the future. The last couple of seasons, however, have proven that he’s not ready just yet.

What the Gunners need, is a stop-gap keeper. Somebody who can hold the fort until Szczesny is fully prepared to be Arsenal’s number one. Somebody who is talented enough to help the Gunners challenge for silverware.

Here’s where Julio Cesar fits in. As the Daily Star notes, most bookmakers have stopped taking bets on the likelihood of Cesar joining the Gunners. It’s widely regarded that a deal will be wrapped up once the Brazilian has finished with this summer’s International duties.

The player himself also seemed to offer a massive hint recently, when he noted he: “wants to stay in England” and that he is “enjoying London and the Premier League”.

The fact that he mentioned London here, suggested to some that he was keen on a move to Arsenal.  This, would be a great move for both the club and for Cesar.

After all, at 33-years-old, he’s got one more big contract in him. He’s also good enough to seriously bolster Arsenal’s silverware chances next season. Better yet, by the time he’s done at the Emirates, Szczesny should be ready to make the step up.

Wouldn’t that make him the perfect fit? If Harry Redknapp doesn’t label him with an outrageous price-tag, the Gunners should go for it.

What’s your take? Should Arsenal look to snap up Julio Cesar from London rivals QPR? Or should they be looking elsewhere?

i have great faith in szczesney but i think an experienced guy like cesar could help both the club and szczesney . the club over the next 3 or 4 years and help szczesney go on and fulfil his obvious potential and be the arsenal no1 for the next 15 years .

Great article. Mannone cost arsenal between 9 and 12 points at the beginning of the last campaign and a new addition of Cesars quality will reduce the goals conceded substantially. For 3.5million it could possibly be one of our best signings and won’t handicap our budget at all.
