LindegaardNobody would claim that Pepe Reina has had a blockbusting season. By his own very high standards, the Spaniard has been somewhat disappointing.

Naturally, he hasn’t been helped out by Liverpool’s leaky defense and a lack of stability in front of him. With Jamie Carragher retiring in the summer and Martin Skrtel and Daniel Agger looking to out-do each other in the calamity stakes, nobody in the Liverpool defense will end this season with rave reviews.

Quite the opposite in fact. Pepe Reina, once one of the Premier League’s most reliable keepers, now looks like a mistake waiting to happen. Whether it’s fumbling the ball, letting in weak efforts, or failing to claim the ball, Reina has disappointed on more than one occasion this season.

Despite this, he still has his reputation. 11 clean sheets in 27 Premier League games isn’t all that bad. And should he recover his confidence once again, Liverpool will still have a world-class keeper. It’s for this reason that Reds fans will have been glad to see Reina tell the Press that he’d happily end his career at Liverpool:

“It would be a nice history to be here more than twelve or thirteen years, why not? I’ve got three more years so I’ll be around for at least three more years I guess and then it depends on Liverpool.” (Source: The Express)

This, of course, is good news for Liverpool. Now, I’d argue that Brendan Rodger’s next step should be signing some real competition for the Spaniard. That could be what it takes to raise his performance levels back up to the golden standard.

Liverpool were recently linked to Manchester United keeper, Anders Lindegaard, a man who has never really had a proper opportunity to establish himself at Old Trafford. With David De Gea’s rise to prominence, the Dane may have to move elsewhere if he’s to rebuild his career. FootyLatest claim that he could cost Liverpool upwards of £3.5m.

Whilst that may seem like a lot for a second-choice goalie, it’s not much to pay for somebody who showed so much promise whilst at Aeslund back in 2010/11. Given a run in cup games, Lindegaard may be able to start giving Pepe Reina a run for his money.

It wouldn’t be the most spectacular signing that Liverpool could make, but it may be a useful one.

What’s your take? Could you stomach seeing Anders Lindegaard at Anfield?
