The ideal £5m transfer option for Liverpool?

Federico FazioIt seems churlish to talk of Liverpool’s defensive frailties following a stonking 6-0 win over a witless Newcastle side, but it may still be necessary.

After all, it’s not like the Magpies offered much going forward. If Newcastle’s best attacking talents had been firing on all cylinders, would the Reds have withstood the barrage? It’s difficult to say, but I certainly wouldn’t bet on it.

That’s because Liverpool’s defensive endeavours have been receiving media coverage for all the wrong reasons this season. Mistakes at the back, poor decisions and a lack of consistency have plagued the Reds’ season and Brendan Rodgers must surely be weighing up his options.

It’s unlikely that he’ll be granted a massive amount of money to spend this summer, so he’ll have to spend smart.

With Jamie Carragher about to retire (expire?) and Daniel Agger and Martin Skrtel’s failure to find consistency, adding another defender seems key. It may be enough to inspire some proper competition between Rodger’s centre-backs and raise the overall performance levels.

This brings me to The Express‘ claim that Liverpool are interested in Sevilla’s lanky centre-back, Federico Fazio.

The Argetinian defender stands tall at a whopping 6 ft 5 inches. This naturally comes in handy when it comes to clear crosses and set-pieces. Naturally, he’s not the quickest along the ground, but he is a smart player who takes up good positions on the pitch. He’s also a strong tackler and a good organiser of the defense. As such, I’m sure he’d make an excellent replacement for Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher.

The Express also claim that Arsenal are interested, but I’m not sure I buy this. The Gunners already have a big, slow, but clever defender in Per Mertesacker. They really don’t need another centre-back in this mould. If Liverpool really are interested, Fazio could be theirs for the taking – especially given Sevilla’s current financial situation.

He certainly seems like a good fit for the Premier League. Best of all, he certainly wont break the bank. His Sevilla contract will run-out at the end of next season and he could be available for just £5m this summer.

Buying an experienced defender for this cheap would allow Brendan to spend more in other areas (like the attack). Given the player’s ability level and price, it seems like a bit of a no-brainer.

What’s your take? Should Liverpool battle it out with Arsenal for Fazio?

I hope next season LFC will fix all position leaking and weakness.Attackin players should get top world class as Christian Eriksen,Henrikh Mkhitaryan with 1 more new striker. Why not try doing crazy signing like Cavani and Higuin??? Carroll and Borini is stiil not good and just ordinary player.Cannot push to higher level yet.Cavani and Higuin can making LFC lokk diffrent next season.CDM areas also need attention to be fix it.Lucas can making highly tackle now at BPL but not to creative assist foward players. This is the problem. How many goal that he score untill now???Not more than 5 goal for all games.Chiek Tiote,Lucas Biglia,Extrrebarria iand diame is good candidates to get sign after we we miss out Yann M’villa. Why not Mussa Sissoko from NUFC?NUFC now intressting to sign in Carroll and Jay Spearing. Please try get the best offer from Nufc…..swap with sissoko.Great player and not so easy to hijack the ball from his foot. Can you see it?
