Liverpool given a deadline to sign this £15m talent: should Brendan bite?

Fans and pundits a like will be watching Brendan Rodgers with great interest this summer. Exactly how will the Liverpool boss respond to a season of disappointment?

The Reds have looked out of sorts for the best part of three or four years now and need somebody to breathe fresh life into their aching bones.

Should they continue to offer limp, lifeless performances, they’ll stop being able to attract big players.

That’s why it’s important that Brendan takes advantage of the club’s big reputation before it’s too late. Before talented players start to realise that Liverpool isn’t the best place to go to further their career.

After all, these things are circular. If Liverpool bring in good players, they have a chance of winning silverware. If Liverpool win silverware, they’ll be able to attract even better players.

But if the club’s top brass doesn’t roll the dice and fails to provide Brendan Rodgers with enough funds, stagnation may well kick in.

One player that the Reds have been linked to for a while now, is Cristian Eriksen, the young Danish play-maker who has been making quite a name for himself at Ajax.

Eriksen is a technically gifted midfielder with an impressive range of passing and a constant desire to get forward and support his strikers. I’d compare him to Steven Gerrard, but he doesn’t really share the England International’s tackling ability.

In a recent article regarding the youngster, The Mirror quoted a source close to Eriksen, who said: “One minute there was a concrete interest and Liverpool were willing to pay the fee, but now they are taking their time.”

This has led to the suggestion that Eriksen will snub Liverpool’s advances, unless the club makes a £15m offer within the next month.

Now, I’ve never heard of a player making these kind of demands before, but I do think it would be a mistake for Liverpool to let this one get away from them.

Eriksen is one of the best young players in Europe. He’d only be available for £15m, because he’s reaching the end of his Ajax contract. He’s actually worth considerably more than that and his price-tag is only likely to grow.

He’d also help to make Liverpool more competitive on the pitch. He’d certainly be a step up on the likes of Joe Allen.
