Is Manchester the home of English football?

|

Iconic MomentsManchester United have recently captured a record 20th league title and for the second year in a row, the two Manchester clubs occupy positions one and two in the table. This got me thinking, where is the home of English football?

Some people may say that there is no home of English football or that there are to many cities to choose from. Yet, the three cities I have selected to pit against each other to be crowned “home” have won 49% of every league, FA Cup and League Cup ever. Between just three cities!

Meet the candidates:

London:

14 professional clubs play their football in the capital of England. The three main clubs in terms of trophy winning are Arsenal, Chelsea and Tottenham. These three clubs have combined won one Champions League, 19 league titles, a record 26 FA Cups (with the help with one very famous Wimbledon victory) and 10 League Cups.

Another factor to take into consideration, is that the England national team play their home fixtures in London at Wembley Stadium.

Liverpool:

Liverpool is a city with a remarkable football pedigree. When someone mentions Liverpool and football, people will automatically think about the 1970’s/80’s trophy winning phenomenon that lives in Anfield. Liverpool FC have won a staggering 38 major trophies including five European titles.

Manchester United are widely considered the most successful English team (they are)! But Liverpool FC does run a close 2nd. Evertonians relax! Your club obviously gets mentioned. Liverpool FC are not the only team who play their football in Liverpool. Everton have won 12 major trophies including nine league titles.

There is, as expected, a fierce rivalry but it is a rivalry that can be suspended by serious off the pitch issues. For example Everton’s on-going support for those who were unfortunately affected by the Hillsborough tragedy.

Manchester:

Manchester United are the most successful club in English football history, the most supported club around the world and also the most famous team on the planet. United have been champions of England a record breaking 20 times and have many other honours to their name. Manchester City also play in Manchester and have made small contributions to the city’s trophy cabinet over the years. City’s return to prominence, albeit because of the riches of their owner, is now starting to deliver a few cups to aid the town’s dominance of the country. This dominance that has led to the last three league titles ending up in Manchester.

The inter-city rival is now much more fierce then ever before. Towards the end of the 1968 season City’s manger Joe Mercer and his United counterpart Sir Matt Busby both expressed their desire for the other club to win. Sir Matt wanted City to win the league and Mercer returned the favour with his wishing for United to become the first English club to win the European Cup. The Munich air disaster was devastation to City as well as United. The rivalry is different today (picture Tevez calling Neville a boot-licking moron).

Verdict:

If you look back in time especially to the 1970’s and 1980’s, Liverpool ruled supreme. But now after taking 2/3 of the last 21 Premier League titles Manchester is surely the current home of English football.

The question is, can the Mancunians keep it up after two shocking managerial departures?

    nooooooooooo…home of arseholes!

  • Jack says:

Liverpool is certainly England’s capital of European Trophies. No competition. (Oh. and Real Madrid are the biggest most famous club in the world)

    • Caleb Dodd says:

Manchester United have approximately 350 million fans compared to Real Madrid’s estimated 180 million. They have the BIGGEST fan-base worldwide. There is no way to prove fame but if you did some research you would realise United are really well known in Asia and Africa (the two biggest continents in the world). I am not doubting Liverpool’s prominence on the European scale I am just saying that as a city Liverpool is falling behind to Manchester when it comes to recent footballing success.

Manchester the home of football in England….you having a laugh. They share the exact same amount of major trophies….but you will find that Liverpool were the first team to introduce singing on the terraces….they are the only English team whom has a European Cup as resident in their trophy room being the only English side to win it Five times. It was only when money became a huge factor in the game did Manchester actually become a force in the footballing world. That says it all…..and the fact you fail to mention this highlights the ignorance towards which city is actually footballs real home. And we won’t go into which fans are renowned for their footballing knowledge….!!! There will only ever be one winner no matter how many trophies one team holds over the other.

    • Caleb Dodd says:

In the Premier League era the time you are referring to as when money became a huge factor Liverpool spent £64 million pounds more than United. They do share an equal amount of major trophies. Realistically will they still be level in 3 years time? Liverpool do stand alone when it comes to European success. I will never say that Liverpool were not the best English club in the 1970’s and 1980’s because it is obvious they were. They won 21 major trophies in two decades! In the 1990’s and 2000’s even you can’t deny United have been the best team. It’s interesting that Liverpool started singing first and I will admit to not knowing that. Liverpool are a huge footballing city but if you read the article carefully all I said is Manchester is the current home of English football.

The home of English football is the North West, that is the old Lancashire that included Merseyside and Greater Manchester. Teams from Lancashire have won 57 of the 114 top league titles. London is next highest with 19
