Cristiano-RonaldoAre you ready for a whole host of fun facts and figures? This treasure trove of information is brought to you courtesy of The Star, who claim that Manchester United will have a £60m war-chest to spend this summer.

It seems that the club’s reward for a good season is more money and the opportunity to create an even better squad. If this really is the path forward for United, they could be about to build an unstoppable team. Even with Manchester City’s seemingly endless resources, there’s a good chance they’ll struggle to keep pace with The Red Devils in the transfer market.

It’s claimed that the newly crowned Champions turned over £92m in the last quarter, whilst also boasting and increase of 52% in sponsorship revenue. Then there’s the commercial arm of the club, which has contributed £114.5m to United’s coffers over the last year. This has seen the club’s debt fall by 16%.

In other words, United are in a strong position financially. They should have some money to spend this summer and should they spend it wisely they’ll be in a position to earn more success and more money. It’s a nice circle for the club to be trapped inside.

These details seem to boil down into a £60m transfer kitty that the next United boss can spend which-soever way he pleases. So how should he divide his spending?

The Star claims that his list of targets includes Cristiano Ronaldo, Leighton Baines and Robert Lewandowski.

If those are truly the players that the club is after, then the decision should be easy. Manchester United can’t afford Ronaldo. Even if he isn’t completely happy at the Bernabeu, Real Madrid have no reason to sell him at below market price.

United may be better served waiting until his contract situation at Madrid is a little more perilous.

Robert Lewandowski and Leighton Baines, on the other hand, are well within United’s price-range. Indeed, Sir Alex should be able to snap both up and still have money spare.

Robert Lewandowski is approaching the end of his Borussia Dortmund contract and Baines may fancy a move to a big club. Neither would come ‘cheap’, but they’d both make for good investments. Lewandowski would add fire-power to United’s already strong forward-line and Baines is one of the best full-backs in the country.

Should Fergie pull this off, success may well be assured for next season.

What’s your take? How should the next Manchester United boss spend his £60m?
