Could this £30m man be ideal for Manchester United’s midfield?

Claudio MarchisioDespite Manchester United’s already impressive achievements this season, I’m sure that the club is already looking ahead to next year and new conquests.

Whilst the Red Devils have run away with the Premier League this season, the club’s top brass may well recognise that it wont be so easy next time round. Manchester United and Chelsea both have more-or-less unlimited funds. They’ll be able to go back into the transfer market, sign up a few world-beaters and come back next term stronger than ever.

Whilst Chelsea have to deal with the constant turnover of managers, I fully expect Manchester City to cause United problems again over the next 12 months. Then there’s Arsenal, who have money to spend this summer and even Tottenham, who have the Premier League’s best player in tow.

Suffice to say, Manchester United can’t afford to rest of their laurels. Whilst they have the strongest squad in the Premier League (particularly going forward), there are some areas that need a little tweaking.

Despite all their rumours concerning Robert Lewandowski, I personally wouldn’t touch Manchester United’s almost flawless front line. It’s the midfield that I think should be the priority.

Good job then, that Calciomercato are reporting that United have their eyes on £30m Juventus midfielder, Claudio Marchisio. The Italian midfielder has earned his price-tag and his reputation as one of Europe’s best midfielder, following two-or-three years of excellent performances for Juve and Italy.

Marchisio has the passing range of Michael Carrick, but combines it with an awesome work-rate, good feet and fine dribbling ability. He’s not exactly a box-to-box midfielder, but he does cover a lot of ground and is very useful going forward. He’d also provide the midfield with more balance – he’s just as good defensively as he is offensively.

He’s been mooted as a potential replacement for Paul Scholes and Marchisio would surely fit that mould pretty well. He consistently provides his club with a number of goals and assists each season. At 27-years-old, the Italian ace is probably about the enter the peak stage of his career.

Given this, he wont come cheap. Manchester United would be lucky to snap him up for anything less than £30m. That may be a lot of money to spend, but given what it would do to United’s squad, it may well be worth it. This is a signing that could keep the likes of City off of the club’s back for a couple more years to come.

What’s your take? Should Manchester United really be looking to spend big on a midfielder?
