Henrik MkhitaryanNo matter what type or spin, or complexion you try to add to Liverpool’s season, it’s always going to end up looking off-kilter, ugly and full of false promise.

Brendan Rodger’s arrival at the club suggested a new dawn. But Liverpool fans have been made to put up with more of the same.

This is largely due to the club’s understandably cautious nature in the transfer market. They’ve spent big in the last decade or so and this has damaged the club’s prospects.

It’s also had a knock on effect on Rodgers, who has struggled to find top class talent with the budget available to him. Whilst Philippe Coutinho and Daniel Sturridge look like smart signings, with plenty to offer the club in the long-term, signing Joe Allen is beginning to look more and more like a mistake.

It’s been a mixed bag thus far for Rodgers, but I’d argue that this is the best you can expect when he’s under such heavy scrutiny from the Liverpool pay masters.

Any real steps forward, however, may require a significant investment.

This brings me to The Mirror‘s claim that Liverpool have lined up Shakhtar Donetsk’s ace midfield talent Henrik Mkhitaryan for a potential move this summer. It’s even claimed that he’s Brendan Rodger’s ‘top target’.

Whilst he’s not exactly a household name (perhaps because it’s so hard to spell?), there are plenty of reasons for Liverpool fans to be excited. I’ll give you 19 of them – that’s how many goals he has scored from a midfield position this season.

He’s a player who at one point this season grabbed 10 goals in 6 games. That’s a remarkable feat for a player in his position. How Liverpool could use his goal-scoring nous and courage in front of goal.

Yes, the Ukrainian League isn’t the most challenging in the world, but he’s earned himself a real reputation and looks ready to make a move to a big club. I can’t help but hope that that club is Liverpool.

The player himself is definitely ready to move on: “For every player, to play for the strongest clubs in the world is a dream, and the main goal. I will do everything possible to move this summer to a different team.”

He wont come cheap, but quality rarely does. The Mirror claim he could cost upwards of £25m. This figure may turn others away, but I can’t help that Liverpool push forward.

What’s your take? Should Liverpool be in the market for this Armenian magician?
